Former first lady's donation aids son

And if I buy blankets at Wal-Mart & donate them to hurricane victims, I'm 'aiding' Wal-Mart and myself, because I own stock in Wal-Mart. Would anyone really expect me to buy the blankets at Target?

One can rely upon MSM to cast a cloud over anything the Bush family does.....

If President Bush was observed walking on water, MSM would have banner headlines "Bush Can't Swim"....

Semper Fi

I am on your side....I just am so down on the MSM...that I tend to project what I think their reaction will be.

BTW..as a Texan, it is bad enough that our school taxes and other taxes have to go to interpretors and Hispanic teachers because of the illegals...but NOW, these students from NO may have to be held back...or get extra mentoring..

IOW..costing US more, so ANY help that Barbara Bush, or any one else wants to do, is fine with me.

I think I understand the "stategery" of the Houston Post.

1. Take you own money and give it to a charity but say how to spend it is bad because your son is involved in the charity. This must be bad because the Houston Paper says it is.

2. Give your money to a bunch of bureaucrats and let them squander the money is good. This must be good because the Houston Papers says it is.

A classless move from an otherwise very classy lady.

You don't think you really know Barbara Bush do you? Her and her husband are great friends with Bill Clinton. Remember him? They guy that masturbated on an intern in the White House. Remember him? So you don't think you really know her do you?

The fact is that the whole Bush family have traded their political ties, fame and influence in to millions of dollars of income. It's a good deal if you can get it. Neil with Silverado Savings and all the stuff he has been involved in, including this deal. Jeb with all sorts of things in Florida, George W. with the stadium deal. All of them have had middle east connections like most of the family has since the early 1900's.

George HW and Barbara are very nice people. I saw them at a public function in Houston awhile back and they look fantastic for their age. She is just doing things the way they are used to. They are in an elite group and I suppose if any of us were members of that group maybe we would be doing the same kinds of things too.

The fact is that the entire Bush family have made a lot of money off of their family involvement in government. Some will say that's OK because we got a good deal in return. George HW Bush was almost killed fighting for his country and toiled as president. George W. Bush will never be able to walk done the street alone for the rest of his life without some kind of protection. The same goes for his wife. Maybe they are owed a bit of riches. Well, except Neil maybe:)

Sure, it's their money to give to charity, but gee folks, keep in mind how they made that money. It's the way it works and you can see the same things happen to people all over the political spectrum who have control of some part of the distribution of government funds. A lot of them end up very rich. That's just the way it is. Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't been around politicians much.

Once little Neil gets his foot farther in he door with HISD getting it removed will be a chore. You see gang, my issue isn't with Barbara, she is at the point in her life she can tell us to go fly a kite (and likely will). My issue is that Neil Bush cost taxpayers a billion dollars in the savings and loan bidness and I'd prefer he keep away from the public trough.

Technically, tax laws don't allow funneling of money through tax-exempt organizations to benefit relatives. Used to work in a church. It' be like donating for your daughter through the benevolence fund, getting the tax write-off and your daughter reaping the benefit.

It is not a zero sum game, because Bar gets a tax break for making the donation. Therefore, it actually adds to the Bush family holdings.

It is still a net loss from the holdings

So in effect she was donating software instead of donating cash. Nothing wrong with that. If anyone has a problem with that, first explain how much free software you have donated to schools recently.

"A classless move from an otherwise very classy lady."

Classless or smart? Given the corruption concerning Katrina, I'd much rather donate through a relative who would make sure it went where I wanted it to go. The main reason I haven't donated more than I have is because I can't be sure it's actually going to where it's needed.

Try this - she is, in effect, giving her son a government contract and taking a tax deduction in the process. Her family benefits twice.

Not classy.

What if the software her son's company makes isn't the best for the job? What if her son's company jacks up the price?

At the very least, it looks like a conflict of interest. I expected better from her.

So if I donated a bunch of "SCORES" gift cards would the donation be seen as unfairly aiding SCORES?...WHOOPS, the Katrina victims ALREADY know how to do this kind of thing....LOL

You think she's concerned about corruption in a fund that her husband helped establish?

Do you really think that?

typical MSM. Trying to spin a generous donation into something sleazy.

A generous donation that must be used to benefit the donor's son is sleazy.

That's a real stretch.

But even if she was concerned about corruption in her husband's fund, this wouldn't solve it.
