Slain Minister's Wife to Be Charged With Murder Friday, March 24, 2006 MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The wife of a Tennessee pastor found shot dead in his house Wednesday will face first-degree murder charges, authorities announced Friday.

Mary Winklerwas found Thursday night with the couple's three daughters in Orange Beach, Ala., about 400 miles south of their home in Selmer.

Investigators with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said she was interviewed during the night and the charges were being prepared.

"We've interviewed her and she was cooperative," said Jennifer Johnson of the TBI, adding that once a warrant with the charges was drawn up, extradition proceedings would begin to have her returned to Tennessee.

Matthew Winkler was found shot to death in the bedroom of his parsonage Wednesday by church members who began searching for him after he failed to show up at an evening event at Selmer's Church of Christ.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but Winkler's wife and children — Breanna, 1; Mary Alice, 6; and Patricia, 8 — were gone.

Wow! That is interesting. Has anyone made a timeline of events as yet?

I didn't say anything about "coaching."

Somebody else did in an earlier post. I'm sorry I inadvertantly attributed it to you.

It would be a good thing if we prayed for her and the children.

I was working on one, as I usually do with a crime I'm following in-depth. However, there has been so much misinformation reported on timing of things, that I'm going to wait until another full news cycle goes by to put any of it down on "paper" (here).

One of the TV stations got it all fouled up and some others then followed suit - plus there are people (posters at other forums) quoting details I haven't seen at all anywhere. The TV thing was changing Matthew's last sighting, walking with the dogs in the neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon around 3:30 PM--they made it Wednesday instead and lots of stories carried that as how long it had been since he had been killed, which isn't true at all.

I have a lot to fill in that I think is correct, but I'm still trying to determine which of the local media there are more accurate than others. They have good info, but they get a LOT of things wrong - off by just a tad, but enough to throw off everything.

That's normal for a crime like this, anyway.

Another example--there was an email sent to Greta VS that she printed on her blog, saying some things about Mary's physical health, claiming to know the family. But then the writer got a major point very wrong and some minor ones wrong, so I'm not going to repeat it, unless another credible person corroborates it.

Stuff like that is crazy-making, but normal forum stuff, as we know!

It's OK - when facts and news and non-factoids are flying fast & furiously, it's hard to keep up with who said what.

A few days ago, I found that Matthew, his father Dan, and his grandfather Wendell, were all born in Texas. Thought that was interesting, being a Texan myself, because they are so closely identified with both Tennessee and Alabama.

Matthew's obituary is up now at the Shackelford Funeral Home website and the guest book and obit are at Legacy now. (I believe the funeral home is owned by the Robert Shackelford who is a church elder at Matthew's church - the one who urged everyone to stay calm and forgive.) Here are links:

When the truth is convenient the Treason Media prints it. Mr. Yates was at a minimum blind to the problem with his wife and at worst contributed to it. Crackpot clergymen have never helped solve family problems.

You're just full of excuses. Crackpot clergymen and contributing husbands didn't kill anyone.

I am listening to the judge right now. His affect, his tone of voice, his nonjudgemental tone tears at my heart (and I mean that in a good way, not a slam at him). It makes this tragedy so real.

Wow, I was not expecting to seeing his wife listed as a survivor. Don't know what I expected, but that surprised me.

There are no excuses which justify husbands who listen to crackpot clergy and endanger their wives and children. Presumably you have word from some higher power which explains all that happened.

I have been praying, Marysecretary. I am praying for the whole family, and the congregation.

I so hope the children have not been abused in any way.

well, that interview of mary winkler's lawyer on nancy grace's show tonight basically rules out child molesting as a motive

Did I hear correctly that she is going to view his body tonight? I also got the impression that her lawyer is trying out the theory that she is innocent.
