Slain Minister's Wife to Be Charged With Murder Friday, March 24, 2006 MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The wife of a Tennessee pastor found shot dead in his house Wednesday will face first-degree murder charges, authorities announced Friday.

Mary Winklerwas found Thursday night with the couple's three daughters in Orange Beach, Ala., about 400 miles south of their home in Selmer.

Investigators with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said she was interviewed during the night and the charges were being prepared.

"We've interviewed her and she was cooperative," said Jennifer Johnson of the TBI, adding that once a warrant with the charges was drawn up, extradition proceedings would begin to have her returned to Tennessee.

Matthew Winkler was found shot to death in the bedroom of his parsonage Wednesday by church members who began searching for him after he failed to show up at an evening event at Selmer's Church of Christ.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but Winkler's wife and children — Breanna, 1; Mary Alice, 6; and Patricia, 8 — were gone.

Why is everyone getting labeled "bi-polar" any more? What a crock!

Bi-polar is what Debra LaFave said she has isn't it?

There is the possiblity that she was involved with someone else and he found out and threatened to leave her. Or she could have been whacked out in the head and decided she wanted to leave him and went to an extreme.

My money is on either he was physically abusive to wife or sexually molesting daughter(s). Thoughts?

Well, of course he was!

Especially now since he cannot refute the charges.

Still does not make sense. If it was an afair or child abuse I do not think she would run, unless it was her who was having the affair.

"$20 says the MSM will find some way to use some element of this story to try to trash Christians."

Exactly, the demonization of Matthew Winkler begins in five minutes.

or she caught him doinmg something horrible to one of the children... (or thought he was)

This was my immediate thought, she caught him with one of the girls. Then one minute later, this comes to mind: the oldest daughter, having experienced whatever, sees dad about to do same to one or both of her younger sisters and she is the one who took him out. 10 is not too young in Alabama to know how to use a gun. Mom throws the girls in the car and takes off, no real effort at hiding, just gets on the run, why they got cuaght so quickly.

Total speculation on my part, I realize ... it comes from one too many "American Justice" stories, I suppose. Just that we keep hearing these tales of *typical American family* time and time again.

Maybe we could just wait until the facts are known before we jump to such conclusions. You know, in the interest of fairness and truth and all that stuff.

If she is the whack job maybe HE was going to leave and take the daughters with him! I interviewed for temps a couple of years ago so I could go on vacation and one of the women who interviewed started with she was bipolar! I thought what a great way to eliminate someone for hiring! Like it's something to announce like you won a prize! Ha!

Seems like I heard post-partum depression on one of the shows last night. That may have been guests speculating, though.

My first thought also, when I saw the news, was she caught him with the church secretary or choir director (male or female) or he was abusing her or the kids.

Happens a lot.

At any rate, I feel so sorry for those poor kids.

I spose that is possible, (that she was involved with another) but think it improbable because of having a 1 year old....

And, whatever the reason, murder is never excusable. There are other ways to resolve these problems... but who knows what kinds of pressure she was under, and she may have snapped.

Why is it that most people tend to think that the husband must have deserved it?

It's a convenient defense, since they had a small one. But I'm more inclined to think she'll fall back on "physically and mentally abusive."

My theory is post partum depression being treated with anti-depressants. The baby is only one year old. It's so sad!

I have also heard of cases, where a woman did something like that because she was the victim of violent domestic abuse. What happens is: She has been the target of repeated abuse and finally snaps, when threatened with further abuse. A quite frequent behavior in such cases, is the woman panics, and does something stupid, like fleeing (tends to incriminate).

I am withholding judgement, until hearing more details about the circumstances. No, I do not consider abuse was impossible, just because the husband was a minister. I have heard of a number of cases, where a minister was engaging in domestic abuse, specifically wife beating and child beating.
