Canada says annual seal hunt to start Saturday

Canada's annual seal hunt, the focus of a major protest effort by animal activists, will start on Saturday and could last longer than usual because the ice floes on which the seals gather are in poor condition, officials said on Thursday.

Canada says a total of 325,000 harp seal pups can be shot or clubbed to death this year. The first stage of the hunt, which takes place on ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Canada's East Coast, will account for just over 90,000 animals.

Activists, who say the killing is cruel and unnecessary, say they will film the proceedings. The hunt officially starts at 6 a.m. on Saturday.

" In Ontario in the 60s and 70s at least, canadians did not even need a license to hunt deer..result? They decimated the deer population in ontario."

I grew up in rural Ontario. Deer could only be hunted during a brief (two weeks) season. There were even more restrictions on hunting the does. There's a lot less hunting today, and some areas are being overrun with deer.

I'd like to thank you and the rest of your countrymen for all the wonderful seal, fox, lynx and mink pelts that you've exported to the States. They helped feed, cloth, house and educate me, my sister and my parents. Dad was a fur dresser for many years. So was his father.

I will actually swear on the bible that the moose and bear, black and grizzly, are still well and alive, and flourishing in the great Canadian North.

Of course they are . If anything there are more now than ever. Deer in Southern Ontario are next to a pest . Alfalfa , corn and wheat fields offer a feast they never had in the bush , with no natural predators around . Moose and bears abound in Northern Ontario. Woodland Caribou are still found north of Superior and Elk have been brought back to the Perry Sound , Sudbury area . With the elimination of the spring bear hunt and the mild winters bears are next to out of control. The only extinction I know of occurred 2 hundred years ago when the beaver were decimated in North Eastern Ontario by the fur trade . Now the beaver can be found all over Ontario .

2004 population: Moose, Ontario 115,000 , Quebec 100,000 New Brunswick 23,000

Deer, Ontario 400,000 , Quebec 285,000 New Brunswick 85,000

Ontario in the 60s and 70s at least, canadians did not even need a license to hunt deer

That's wrong. First resident deer license I bought was in '66 . Cost me $10. Non resident was more . And you better have a license, It wasn't uncommon to encounter Lands and Forest roadblocks . And they'd take everything but your clothes if you had a deer and didn't have a license .

btw, Moose do not herd and bears don't travel in January . Unless they're sleep walking.

And I've had a bear inside my house,

Not fun. I had one nudge my shoulder one night while I was sleeping in my sleeping bag. . He then snorted like a pig and took my back pack for a walk. I'll never forget the sound of canvas ripping while I sat there wondering what just happened. . ( what can I say, I though I had it strung high enough in the tree.) :)

Bubble boy - it appears that you have lost touch with how far Canada has descended into the abyss.

Abortion---available 24-7
gay marriage--didn't your loonie govt. just approve it up there?
marijuana- smoke it up bongos.
Muslim terrorists? protect them and let them practice sharia.

In the meantime the hospitals right across the border in the US fill up with Canadians who have to wait 2-3 years to get their bypasses and other "non emergency surgeries" done. At least the surgeries are sometimes done by Canadian born doctors who have fled the madness up there.

AAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!! You pushed one of my buttons. Is that what you really mean or do you really mean the opposite of what you said?

I'm being truthful when I say that I could care less.
I could have taken less care and been careless had I said that
I couldn't care less.. ;)

That's 100% pure unadulterated horseshit.
I don't know where you go to "learn" this crap, but as much
as I dislike the extent to which we have social programs in this country,
our health care system (for all it's shortcomings) is still one of
the best in the world.
The fact is that our life expectancy and recovery from illness times
are far better than that of the U.S.
So don't be blowin smoke up me skirt, matey...

State monopolies of health care do not work...and your insistence of maintaining one shows how out of touch you are. It's flawed, it's broken, and you need to get out more.

I completely support the seal hunt. It is proper wildlife management of a renewable resource.

I think it is sad.

Maybe so, but it's a Canadian matter. And just as I don't care for foreigners to comment on what happens in this country, the rest of the world (that means you Sir Paul) needs to butt out of Canadian affairs.

Your "health" care system is falling apart fast:

I've got a lot of my family coming over for coffee after church
tomorrow and I'll let them know that they've been brainwashed
into believing we have a decent health care system.
It's one thing to criticize a taxpayer funded, Gov't operated
health care system as inefficient and wasteful, but it's another to say that it sucks.
The former is true, the latter is false.
You guys seem to have a knack of supporting and/or opposing the right
things for the wrong reasons.
Is it in the water or are youse guys smokin dope???

How did I miss that thread? Let me guess: there's just too damm many threads on this forum to ever expect to see them all :(
I listen to English language talk shows on the radio from Montreal when I'm in the northern part of the state. This very subject is often the topic of discussion. The host of the show is surprisingly conservative as are many of the callers. But there is one particular panel member who is a flame-ass lieburral. He speaks with a VERY thick German accent. Can't remember his name. Egbert or something like that.

State monopolies of health care do not work..

Yes and no. Generally things operated by the Gov't are run less efficiently
or effectively than if they were run by the private sector.
That said, the Canaduian Gov't's ability to negotiate drug prices with the big
pharmaceuticals, has resulted in far lower drug prices for seniors
than any senior would be able to negotiate on their own.
I've heard some of the U.S. States want to copy our approach.

Just curious - where did you hear that? I really want to know as to
where this misinformation about Canada comes from.
If you are this ignorant of things Canadian, how are you on
other countries and cultures?? Or are you misinformed about them
as well??
And you call me bubble-boy??

Last year more doctors came back to Canada from the USA than went there. The 3 main reasons for going have always been to further education , research opportunities and more money . The more money part being doctors in the US make double what doctors in Canada make . One would think money would keep Canadian doctors in the states but apparently there are now stronger reasons for leaving than staying for the money .

Just wondering whose system is really broken ?

Even though we are very critical of our system why do 88% of Canadians rate their system the best ? After all , I'm thinking that they have used it , they should know whether it works or not.. Were those who would call it madness , never have .
