WASHINGTON, March 23, 2006 Americans need to recognize the sacrifices made by men and women in the military, whose service has liberated millions of people in the Middle East and made this country more secure, President Bush said yesterday in Wheeling, W.Va. "America has got to appreciate what it means to wear the uniform today and honor those who have volunteered to keep this country strong," Bush said to an audience of military families at the Capitol Music Hall. "All of us should agree with the fact that we have a remarkable country when people who know that they're going to be sent into harm's way raise their hand and say, 'I volunteer to serve.'"
Committing troops into harm's way is the most difficult decision any president can make, Bush said, but the war on terror is a fight the U.S. can't run away from. While debates about the war in Iraq are inevitable, Bush said, he is optimistic about the war in Iraq, because the U.S. has a clear strategy for victory.
"If I didn't think we'd succeed, I'd pull our troops out," he said.
Despite politics or debates about the war, U.S. leaders remain committed to supporting the troops, Bush said. Congress continues to act to ensure troops are well-trained, well-paid, well-equipped and well-housed, he said.
All Americans should serve their country, whether in uniform or not, Bush said. Those who aren't in the military can serve by supporting the troops or by volunteering for a different cause, he said.
"It is a vital part of our societies and our communities -- the idea of people volunteering to help a neighbor in need," he said. "And one of my jobs is to ... honor people who are serving our country that way and to call other people to service as well."
At Halloween last year I was eavesdropping on my two children who were talking about going trick-or-treating. My daughter (6) asked my son (8) if he was scared to go out. He asked her what he should be scared of and she replied monsters and evil people. My son replied to her, "no, I'm not afraid! I'm an American! So long as there is the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines out there I'm not afraid of nothing! After I dried my eyes from the pride I had in both my son and our military, I couldn't helped but be amazed that while my 8 year old son can see that with perfect clarity, why can't all those idiots on the left see that as well while they use that protection to attack the very men and women who provide it.
Very nicely phrased. The looney left really can't hide behind its buzz phrases "withdraw," "downsize," "re-allocate," etc. - it's all part of their cut-and-run screed.
There is no hope for the 60's & 70's crowd that refused to serve or avoided the draft. I see hope in the people in their 40's or younger though.
As per usual; SantRat has done it again!
"...Despite politics or debates about the war, U.S. leaders remain committed to supporting the troops, Bush said...."
....." U.S. Leaders ......committed to supporting the troops..."
You would NEVER find the opposition leaders/supporters INCLUDING any Conservatives Republicans if THEY were to try to give anyone BUT THEM any credit!
But I think President Bush either screwed up his speech here, or assumed that the rest of America already KNOWS what he means when he says ALL our Leaders :
" Support Troops ;
---Conservatives ; Support U.S. Troops ,
---Liberals ; Committed to supporting the ENEMY troops."
THERE!! Now THAT is most clear and precise!
Darth Airborne
" Darth Airborne in the House!! : Women want him ; liberals fear him . "
The libs fail to realize that only about 25 percent of the country's 18-24 year olds are even qualified to serve. By the time you weed out the non high school grads, low test scorers, the obese, the ritalin dependant, the criminal record holders, misfits and drug users, that's all that remains.
As the WWII and Korean Vets die off we will have just 10-15 million veterans in a US population of 250 million.
Now all we have to do is figure out what our soldiers can do about John McCain.

There fixed it.
Naaa. Well kind-of.
I don't think that treason is the goal.
I think treason is the price they are willing to pay to get power.
