FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. The fort has been selected to host the only Conseil International du Sports Militaire (International Military Sports Council)championship in the United States this year.
The 27th World Military Volleyball Championships will take place here June 8-17. Volleyball championships at Fort Huachuca will be one of 20 CISM World Championships conducted this year.
This is the second time Fort Huachuca has hosted a CISM event. It hosted the 2004 Boxing Championships. Twenty-two member nations attended that event.
Fort Huachuca has an excellent reputation for hosting military sports competitions and people like visiting this community, said Col. Jonathan Hunter, garrison commander.
Approximately 20 countries, with about 500 delegates, are expected to participate in the volleyball championships. Both men and women will compete. Currently, Algeria, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Latvia, the Netherlands, Qatar, Serbia-Montenegro and the United States have signed up to participate. Algeria, Canada, China, the Netherlands and the United States will field womens teams.
Additionally, Fort Huachuca will host the All Army Volleyball Trial Camp April 20 - May 10, and the Armed Forces Volleyball Championship May 11-18.
CISM, with a motto of friendship through sport, is the largest authority for military sports activity in the world. CISM has 127 member nations. CISMs goals are to develop friendly relations between the armed forces of member nations, promote physical education and sports activities, provide mutual technical assistance, support less privileged members in the name of friendship and solidarity, contribute towards the balanced and harmonious development of military personnel, and contribute to the international effort for universal peace.
