Drunk people? At a bar? Who knew?
Seriously though, I've always marveled at the seperation between talk and action re things like drunk driving. Everyone knows where to catch a ton of technically drunk drivers: Right outside just about any bar at night.
But that's rarely done.
I think the reason is everyone wants to be seen to be tough on drunk driving, but its just posturing.
Part of the problem with enforcing the state's code regulating alcohol sales is "people still think that a bar is place to go get drunk," Beck said. "People can go into bars and have fun with their friends and not become intoxicated to the point whether they may become a danger to themselves or others."
I'm sorry officer I was just drinking to have fun and lost count...
I am not sure what the laws are in Texas, but here in Maryland someone actually has to be in the car before the police can try to bust them for DUI. Public intoxication, drunk and disorderly, and so forth are another story.
A cop is staking out a bar waiting for someone to come out and drive home. Around 11:45 a biker staggers out and heads towards his Harley. The cop thinks, as soon as he pulls out on the street I'll pull him over. The biker stops reaches for his keys and drops them on the ground so he starts crawling around looking for them. The cop thinks this guy is plastered. A couple of other bikers come out and help the first guy up and light a cigarette for him. The guy smokes the cigarette as as a few more of his buddies come out and leave. Then he trys to start his bike but falls over. The cop thinks I could bust him now but a DWI is bigger bust. I'll get him as soon as he gets on the road. A couple of other bikers come out and get the drunk back up on his bike and help him get it started. They leave him sitting on the bike idling the big V twin. The lights in the bar go out and the biker rolls slowly out on to the road. The cop pulls him over immediately and gives him a field sobriety test which he passes with no problems. The cop says blow into this breathalyser and is surprised to see it registers 0.0. I don't get it says the cop, I've been watching you stumble around for half an hour and now you're sober? The biker looks at the cop and says, "I'm the designated decoy."
Drunk driving is different. Apparently, a bunch of these people were arrested for drinking in a bar. What, there's not enough real crime in Texas for the cops to go after?
I would think the same would hold for arresting people inside a bar and saying that they were going to drive drunk later so we can now arrest them.
This is facist thinking and has no place in America. Many of the people arrested were staying at the hotels that housed the bar they were drinking in.
This is as bad as hate crimes, or maybe worse. Arresting people for what they MIGHT do. Should we arrest people standing outside banks because they might hold it up? How about gun owners? This is one the antis would love. We arrest all gun owners because since they have guns they might commit a crime.
If we allow sh** like this to happen with the bars it won't be long before they are doing it in other areas and maybe in areas you won't be happy about.
A local police officer was driving past a local bar at around closing time so he decided to park on the side of the road across the street from the establishment and observe for a while.
He saw a group of people exit the bar and head for their vehicles.
He noticed one man in particular who was walking with a distinct weave in his step.
While other people got into their cars and drove off, the officer focused on this one, obviously inebriated man while he tried to negotiate the task of finding his car, find his keys and try to unlock the driver side door.
This obviously inebriated man found his car, found the keys in his pocket, dropped them 3 times before finding the keyhole and unlocking the door.
He then proceeded to start the car, place the car in reverse, backed up 10 feet, then placed the car in drive and moved it forward 10 feet.
After 3 attempts to position the car for exit from the parking lot, he was able to guide the vehicle onto the street and proceeded up the road, perfectly straight and within the speed limit.
This was all observed by the police officer so he pulled onto the road, followed the vehicle and turned on his blue lights to signal the car to pull over.
The obviously drunken man pulled his car over to the side of the road and the officer approached the vehicle.
When he got to the driver's window he asked the driver for his license and resgitration.
The driver complied promplty at which point the officer asked, "Have you consumed any alcoholic beverages tonight sir?"
The driver replied, "No sir. Not a drop. You see, I'm the designated decoy for tonight."
Yeah I cant wait till they line up outside the gates at Texas Stadium arresting 30K people at one time......
Come to think of it....if drinking and driving are illegal why are there parking lats at bars????
