t's that time of year when bubbles burst and buzzer beaters ring out across the land. For many, it's an occasion for great elation, for some, bitter disappointment. But if recent news reports are to be believed, it is truly the month of March Madness for Democrats.
According to Rowan Scarborough in the Washington Times, Senate Democrats are planning to use the March congressional recess to "stage press events with active duty military personnel, veterans and emergency responders to bash President Bush on virtually every one of his national security policies."
So in order to regain their footing at the Big Dance in November, are Democrats truly trying to convert a contingency that voted overwhelmingly against them in 2004? Or will they simply try and renew their efforts to paint themselves red, white and blue to look pro-military and thus in line with the majority of Americans? It appears the latter is closer to the mark.
In a memo provided to Scarborough by a congressional staffer titled "Real Security," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid encourages his minions to stage events at "military bases, weapons factories, National Guard units, fire stations and veterans posts." By way of instruction, Reid demonstrates his party's deaf ear on events patriotic:

What military person would go along with Dingy's ploy (if they could) anyway, knowing that they would be totally used! Does Dingy think they are unlike non-military people who have a conscience and a sense of self respect? (Rhetorical question)
Great plan they have there. Too bad it is against the UCMJ.
"ATTENDING POLITICAL MEETINGS
When not in uniform, soldiers may attend
both partisan and nonpartisan political meetings
or rallies as spectators. While soldiers may
go to these rallies, they may not speak before a
partisan political gathering of any kind to
promote a partisan political party or candidate.
The limitations on soldiers participating in
public demonstrations also apply to participating
in political meetings. That is, soldiers cannot
do so when on duty, while in uniform, while on
post, and so forth. Furthermore, soldiers may
not attend partisan political events as representatives
of the Army, even though they do not
actively participate.
Soldiers may also join political clubs and
attend meetings when not in uniform. However,
they may not serve in any official capacity (for
instance, as officers) or be sponsors of a partisan
political club.
I think the lib strategy will backfire, and if these clowns show up and try to talk to our troops, our guys will turn a blind eye and walk away. Any thought from active or retired military FReepers?
