But four senior clerics interviewed by The Associated Press in their mosques in Kabul said Rahman deserved to be killed for his conversion.
"He is not crazy. He went in front of the media and confessed to being a Christian," said Hamidullah, chief cleric at Haji Yacob Mosque.
"The government is scared of the international community. But the people will kill him if he is freed."
"He is not mad. The government are playing games. The people will not be fooled," said Abdul Raoulf, cleric at Herati Mosque. "This is humiliating for Islam. ... Cut off his head."
Raoulf is considered a moderate cleric in Afghanistan. He was jailed three times for criticizing the Taliban's policies before the hardline regime was ousted by U.S.-led forces in 2001.

The Religion of "Pieces" shows it's real self again.
It's an tough religion for an extremely insecure group of people. Everything about it makes perfect sense when you consider the origins. Nomadic people aren't secure by their very nature. The religion seeks to consolidate territory over all else. Not too different from other religions in that regard. The Spanish Mission comes to mind. It's a lot like the islamic mosque. The biggest issue with Islam is the same thing that is the biggest problem with the world today. There is a massive disconnect between the developed and antiquated world. I am sure these people living on dirt floors are speaking from their hearts. What are you going to do about it? That's the question. This is a good one. I hope the international community pushes hard on this guy's deal. It's an amazing sight to see - the illiterate and the highly developed interacting.
Afghanistan Laws need to be changed. They still have the same laws on religion on the books as they had when the Taliban was in office. That is the only way this man will be saved!
If he lives there is hope for world peace in our lifetime. If he dies it will show the true nature of Islam to the skeptics. This is a historical pivotal point.
A majority of clerics in Islam live in the midset of the 7th century; where religious wars were the common practice of "civilizations".
Two bending-over-backwards disclaimers. First, I do not know a great deal about Islam. Second, if the press reports on Islam as fairly, accurately, and impartially as it reports on Biblical Christianity, then they're never to be trusted.
Having said all that, how do you find a happy face for this? (Then I quote the statements from the article.)
I heard the one Muslim I know -- a genuinely nice and completely likable guy, for all I can tell -- complaining that the press distorts things. But you know, and I know, that if any Christian said anything like this, every other Christian with access to a microphone, telephone, or keyboard would be everywhere denouncing him as a dangerous nutcase, and disowning him from head to toe.
I have wondered since I left Somalia, can these people, (Muslims) even handle the concepts of freedom and democracy?
Sometimes I wonder if we should'nt just conquer all of them, kill their leaders and convert them to christianity.

So you consider this cleric to be part of "moderate" Islam because the Associated Press calls him a moderate. The Associated Press says he's a moderate because he disagreed with the Taliban on some issues.
The Associated Press who is always trying to make it look like our efforts in Afghanistan chose four cleric who all thought that this convert should be put to death, so now we're expected to believe that all Muslims all over the world believe that people converting from Islam should be put to death.
You must live a really sheltered life if you believe that lie. I don't have nay close friends who are Muslims, but I've lived around and worked around people of that faith for a good part of my life.
These clerics are using Islam as a means of control. This isn't something unique to Islam. There were ard are those who have used Christianity for the same purposes. Don't forget what Christians did during the Inquisition. Don't forget how some Christians acted during the Crusades (not all, but but a considerable number).
This belief by some that people who convert from Islam must be put to death isn't a core belief of the religion itself. It's part of the efforts of the fundamentalists to control people.
There is a disgusting unwillingness for a large portion of the Muslim people to speak out against such teachings. There is a disguisting unwillingness by Muslims to fix their own problems within those who claim to be part of that faith.
This problem was once common in Christianity as well. It's not a new thing, not is it unique to Islam.
It needs to change.
Islam is a death cult, and a violent religion in the case of anyone actually following it's tenants.
These rules such as putting to death those who convert from Islam aren't the tenants of Islam. They are the laws of men. They are the laws of men who have evolved in a society where those in control keep the commoners in line through authoritarian control in the guise of religious rules.
