Critics believe new legislation in Ohio, Kentucky and several other states will give people a license to kill.
If passed, the victim of a home invasion robbery or car-jacking would have the right to "shoot to kill" to protect themselves.
It's called the "self-defense" bill.
Mitch Daniels, the current governor of Indiana, just signed it into law today.
Tom Scheben, the spokesperson for the Boone County sheriff's department, says he doesn't believe most citizens will misuse a deadly force law.
"I think you see one, every once in a while, and when you do there is mitigating circumstances,.i.e. drugs," said Scheben.
"Otherwise burglars for the most part are just thieves that break into buildings to accomplish their goals," said Scheben. "If there is somebody there, nine times out of 10, they don't go in that house."
In Ohio the law would also make it illegal for the suspect's family to sue the victim for wrongful death.
The bill is still going through the legislative process in Ohio and Kentucky.
More like a license to live.
If passed, the victim of a home invasion robbery or car-jacking would have the right to "shoot to kill" to protect themselves."
So whats the problem?
Gee, I thought we already had this right.
"If there is somebody there, nine times out of 10, they don't go in that house."
Only because they fear the homeowner has a gun and might kill them. In England, where there are no guns [cough] there is a rise in "hot roberries": where the perp robs you while you are at home, and helps himself to your wife and daughter.
Make no mistake, illegal or not, if a criminal breaks into my house I will shoot him dead. I will aim center mass and, once he's down, will put two more into his head just to be sure.
Same result at my house. Wife is armed too, so she might do the honors but dead will be the verdict.
In Ohio the law would also make it illegal for the suspect's family to sue the victim for wrongful death.
Now that's a good law. I hope it passes.

Doesn't matter to me - don't need no license to exercise my right... Their fingerprints, though - that I'd take.
"Police have said that Zebuhr, his mother, his sister and a friend had dined at an Uptown restaurant Saturday night and were walking to their vehicle when two men robbed them about 9:55 p.m. The victims didn't resist, police said, and Zebuhr's mother handed over her purse before Zebuhr was shot."

As much as I'd like a law like this to pass in Minnesota, It'll never happen.

Question. Do you call Merry Maids or 911 first?
Everytime a state passes a law light this one critics claim it will lead to a bloodbath, slaughter in the streets. The only problem is that for states that have such laws in effect there has been no such bloodbath and the crime rate has gone down.
Their purpose is not to give a home owner the right to kill as their opponents claim.
What they do is protect the home owner from being sued by the criminal if he is injured or wounded and they also prevent the family of the criminal from suing the property owner in the event he is killed. A very important and worth while law.
The ones who don't like it are the criminals and the trial lawyers.
Make no mistake about it even if it is ruled a justifiable shooting if you pull the trigger and wound or kill a criminal in your home without the protection of these type laws there is a very good chance you will lose if not all at least a large part of everything you have.
That's why a number of states are passing them.
" if a criminal breaks into my house I will shoot him dead. I will aim center mass and, once he's down, will put two more into his head just to be sure.

Technically you cannot. You can only shoot to stop the other two to the head would be used against you. If they were all a part of the same action (to stop) you might be alright. Then you should immediately continue to secure your family and the dwelling assuming the intruder has friends in the house or just outside.
I would call the local PD on their regular number. Once the bad guy/s are dead and the house is secured it is no longer an emergency and you could get into trouble for misuse of the 911 system

My question was a joke.
Home invasion is sufficient reason to shoot to kill in Louisiana. Been that way for as long as I can remember.
I'd like to see the juries that handed these awards out. Juries usually LOVE it when home invaders get whacked.
"Technically you cannot."
Yup, you're right. I'm thinking if I empty the clip into him, 2 more to the head is not unreasonable for forensics. Panic and adrenaline.
I will grab a new gun and call 9-11 after the kill, and claim I saw other perps with him.
A license to kill assholes...hmmm...not a bad thing...
