ST. LOUIS A St. Louis radio station quickly fired a talk show host for uttering a racial epithet as he talked about Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on his morning show Wednesday.
Dave Lenihan apologized on the air immediately after making what he said was a slip of the tongue. KTRS president and general manager Tim Dorsey agreed the remark was accidental but said it was nonetheless "unacceptable, reprehensible and unforgivable."
Lenihan had been heaping praise on Rice, who has frequently said she aspires to run the NFL one day but has more recently ruled out seeking to replace retiring Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.
"She's been chancellor of Stanford," Lenihan said on the air. "She's got the patent resume of somebody that has serious skill. She loves football. She's African-American, which would kind of be a big coon. A big coon. Oh my God. I am totally, totally, totally, totally, totally sorry for that."
He said he had meant to say "coup" instead of the racial slur.
KTRS listeners soon began calling the station to complain. Twenty minutes after the utterance, Dorsey went on the air to apologize to Rice and KTRS listeners.
"There can be no excuse for what was said," Dorsey said. "Dave Lenihan has been let go. ... There is enough hate. We certainly are not going to fan those flames."

Good. Best way to save your FCC license.
I'm sure she's been called worse.
Racist bastards.
Isnt it time to take the gloves off, liberals are going to
get us all killed, they have no spine to stand up to real enemies they perfer to create dis harmony in our country
and embolden the terrorists(muslims anywhere). Liberals are the enemy and should be stripped of their citizenship and flown to Iraq to face torture and dismemberment!

Probably in the NY Times offices. |
Having an Eyetalian Grandma meant that I had to suffer the slings and arrows of the ubiquitious "wooden spoon" that all Grams carry.
She taught us kids that there was no more serious a sin than to "name call"! Unfortunately, too many of us don't learn this lesson.
I believe he meant to say coup because of the way it reads......and because a black chik running the NFL would certainly be a coup, after all the whining about black coaches, managers, q-backs etc etc etc.
Just heard his interview on KFI 640, just a slip of the word coup..
If he made a mistake and meant to say "coup", it might have been a legitimate mistake. "Coup", and "coon" are similar enough.
how many articles have been written about this? more people have heard the "racial" comments from the MSM than actually heard it live on the radio.

I seriously doubt the radio host intended the word to come out. A major screw-up on his part, but it was just a dumb mistake. Don't these radio guys have a delay to bleep this out?
I think the station went too far, but I also recognize how terrible the backlash from potentially the whole country could have been.

The gravity of a black woman running the NFL would be a coup, period! "coon" just doesn't fit as the last word of the (1 or 2) sentence(s).
They'll lynch him anyway, because they can.
Don't make a mistake or you will be financially crushed. Well, the libs started it, so let them reap what they've sown. Funny that it usually a lib who gets brought down on this sort of thing. Love to see them eat their young!
What a disgusting society it is that breeds such brittle, craven lemmings as those that fired this guy. There is no room for grace in PC totalitarianism.
I'd like to see Rice comment on this.
Unless this DJ has a history of such comments, who other than Moonbat Comlibs could come to such a conclusion?
I believe the guy made a genuine mistake, apologized for the slip of the tongue ON the air, before he was fired.
This is another argument for the use of the 7 second delay and a competent producer in the control room that might have saved this guy's ass, and his job.
On the other hand, if the comment had been made on Air Amerika, it would have been hailed as "speaking truth to power".
The talk show DJ is a well-spoken, flat out nice guy. He was just back from Europe, and intending to run for political office.
I'd like to see Rice HIRE HIM.
Can you imagine? They'd both be heroes.
