San Francisco City Government Calls Catholics 'Hateful, Discriminatory, Insulting, Ignorant'

SAN FRANCISCO, March 22, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In one of the most startling attacks on the Catholic Church coming from a governmental body in the United States in half a century, the governing body of the city of San Francisco - the Board of Supervisors - voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a non-binding resolution blasting the Catholic Church for its opposition to homosexual adoption.

While many city's residents agree with the Church's stand against homosexual adoption, the resolution stated "It is an insult to all San Franciscans when a foreign country, like the Vatican, meddles with and attempts to negatively influence this great city's existing and established customs and traditions, such as the right of same-sex couples to adopt and care for children in need."

The city supervisors levelled an ad hominem attack on former San Francisco Archbishop William Levada, who has been appointed to head the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), one of the most senior posts in the Church.  " Cardinal Levada is a decidedly unqualified representative of his former home city, and of the people of San Francisco and the values they hold dear,'' the resolution stated.

The supervisors also demonstrated their childishness as they attempted another dig at the Cardinal by indicating in the resolution that the CDF was once known as the Office of the Inquisition.  "That the Board of Supervisors urges Cardinal William Levada, in his capacity as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican (formerly known as Holy Office of the Inquisition), to withdraw his discriminatory and defamatory directive that Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Francisco stop placing children in need of adoption with homosexual households," reads the resolution.

The resolution attacked the teaching of the Catholic Church that homosexual adoption does "violence" to children since they would be placed in an environment that is not conducive to their full human development.  The resolution blasted the teaching as "hateful and discriminatory rhetoric (that) is both insulting and callous, and shows a level of insensitivity and ignorance which has seldom been encountered by this Board of Supervisors.''

Demonstrating their own profound ignorance, at least in terms of biological realities, the supervisors contend, "Same-sex couples are just as qualified to be parents as are heterosexual couples."  Concluding, the board urged current San Francisco "Archbishop Neiderauer and the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Francisco to defy all discriminatory directives of Cardinal Levada."

Why wait? Peaches rot after you buy them, but trolls rot before their sign-on date.

Hm, how would the Board respond to another city's resolution with similar words about nearly any other "foreign country"?

Since we're being Socially Aware, I urge these supervisors to address the cause of Abdul Rahman (there's a fine Muslim name). And since it's in 2006 Afghanistan, it must be Bush's Fault! Don't these people care about real insensitivity?

(Oh, I wouldn't expect them to say anything unless, for example, he somehow passed into U.S. custody and some idiot put him in a hood.)

I would rather live a year in post-Katrina New Orleans than live for day in San Francisco.

I'm not Catholic, and have forgotten from my visits to the church, who was it that was the Patron Saint of lost causes?

I do not like to be superstitious, but when the actor Christopher Reeves (became a Scientologists) blasted the Catholic Church for not supporting stem cell research for spinal injuries, he succumb to an infection within one year and died. His healthy nonsmoking wife continued to blast the Catholic Church for their stand on stem cell research, and she died of lung cancer this year. God is patient but he has limits.

"I wonder what it is like to be a cop in SF."

I was just there and all their sirens sound like whining crybabies: Whaaa! Whaaa!

"I'm proud to say I have never been to SF (except to change planes) and I will never visit it."

I think that's how SF was settled. Travellers changing planes that missed their flights.

If you were a Jew in 15th century Europe, (LOL, even in the early 20th century in Slovakia), you might hold a similar view...

You're saved. The San Francisco airport isn't in the city-county but in San Mateo County.

If you mean the rabid anti semitism, I still do hold that similar view. I'm not Jewish either, but I feel for them.

You bring up a fascinating point.

I wonder if the Church should retaliate by demanding they rename the city.

Saint Francis is an established brand of the Catholic Church. The brand has been protected for centuries.

They should demand San Fran rename itself.

Just the discussion alone would prove the point.

Ah - Gamorah CA. Has a nice ring to it.

I have a hard time believing God kills people when they are wrong about something.
I do think we all get a good "talking to" when we face Him about all the things we've been wrong about.

The Vatican (the successor to the Papal States) came into existence because the Popes of Rome grew quite rich and held much land, occupied by their temporal vassals. The Donation of Sutri in 728 put the Papal States irrevocably on the map; however, the tradition of Papal supremacy over his land holdings dates to the 500s.

The Vatican today, although technically a nation-state, occupies only the Pontifical compound and has no real lay population.

This comes from the same city that in 1906 segregated Japanese-American schoolchildren and instigated riots against the Japanese population only months after accepting lavish Japanese benevolence to rebuild the city after the earthquake and fire. So badly did San Francisco treat the Japanese that they forced President Roosevelt to negotiate an international agreement that effectively forbade Japanese immigration. So San Francisco historically has not declined to meddle in foreign affairs. Oh, yeah, and they also have demanded the impeachment of the President so that their own Nancy Pelosi can take office.

I've been brought up to believe God will not be mocked. I think there is a fair chance He's not happy when His Church is mocked, either.

I pray He will give good warning to the faithful living in San Fagcisco before the quake hits.

I hope liberals keep up their anti-Christian bigotry. It ensures they'll remain a permanent minority in this country - which I don't mind.
