Who says time travel isn't possible?
I got a bona fide '60s flashback last week when I attended a meeting of the John Birch Society.
Remember them?
Frankly, I was astonished to learn the Birch Society still exists. Shouldn't it have crumbled along with the Berlin Wall?
For those too young to remember, the Birch Society was one of many groups fighting the global menace of communism.
But of all the patriots standing foursquare against communism, the Birchers were always the ones in tin-foil hats.
Or so it seemed. Bless their hearts, they were sort of the kooky cousins of anti-communism the folks who never met a conspiracy theory they didn't bite.
And sure enough, last week's meeting had barely started before there was a sneering reference to the Council on Foreign Relations.
I got a nostalgic little shiver. How cute! They still hate the CFR.
You know in the cartoons how the Super Friends always battled the evil Legion of Doom?
Well, for Birchers, the starchy Council on Foreign Relations is the Legion of Doom. It's part of the nefarious "invisible government" that really runs the country.

Back in my Libertarian days, I was interested in what the Birchers had to say. Now I know they were just nuts.
I'm not
Why do you have that negative perception of the Society? Perhaps your tin foil hat thoughts were planted there by the press's portrayal even back then.
The John Birch Society consistently said that the Soviet Union was evil incarnate.
And they were of course right.
They had John Birch Society pamphlets in the gas station bathrooms in very southern IN. That was some intersting BR reading.
WOW....well yeah...the right, and I assume the JBS, need to be on their toes against the kind of socialistic crap spewed forth by our friends there at the Dallas Morning News, who would model our country after, oh lets say the French, the same French who are rioting in the streets because they might not be guaranteed a job for life in their Marxist mecca.
God Bless Tail Gunner Joe Mc Carthy
Oh, I dunno.
Maybe because they saw rich Jews manipulating politicians and public events?
No doubt I'd probably agree that the Birchers have some ideas that are "over the top" but I really despised the mocking tone that the writer adopts throughout the article. He spends very little time explaining the Bircher positions beyond what it takes to make a cheap joke (e.g., see reference to comic books). I wonder, would he take the same tone with a meeting of say, Code Pink or just about all the programming on Error America or any of the drivel coming out of Cindy Sheehan's mouth? Perhaps, but then, perhaps not.
Even a blind pig finds an acorn occasionally. The JBS was also famous for their belief in the Illuminati, controlling world history from the shadows, off-stage. Do you buy that too?
If every event is a manipulation by some global illuminati, then, yes, they would be considered normal.
"the Birch Society was one of many groups fighting the global menace of communism."
While this is true, the main message of JBS going waaaay back to the earliest 1960's was and is "Get U.S. Out of the UN!" As valid a concern today as it was originally!
An updated version of the Illuminati, and just as nutty.
Replace the word "Jews" with "Multinational corporations" and they hit the nail on the head. Why is it limited to "Multinational corporations"? Uni-national corporations don't engage in such things?
Who is doing the lobbying for open borders?

Bingo!
Hey, ya wanna see something really interesting? Find copies of the entire front page of various urban newspapers for famous dates during WWII and Korea. Check out the side articles, not the main headline story. Very familiar anti-American defeatist bs to be found. The libs have been around for a LONG time.
