Yeah they were/are off in a lot of areas. Kinda like most of the politics today. Many of their stances were Libertarian or Conservative with a large doses of Socialism and Heresy thrown in. You just gotta stay tuned and not go by the MSM portrayals.
Unions.
If you oppose "Multinational corporations", everyone knows you are using a code word, that you aren't making an economic comment at all, and that you are just being anti-semitic.
It's all in the decoding.
And the department of commerce and many other corporations.
News Flash! This just in! The John Birch Society Still Exists!
Can't wait for tomorrows headline to find out what the status of the KKK is.
I don't think it's really anti-semitism but it is of the same dull-headed-brownshirt mentality. It's a McCarthyite word which like 'racist' is used to explain everything. Come to think of it, anti-semitism is also overused.
Before typing ignorant, uninformed libel about the JBS, why don't you go the JBS website, read a couple of issues of The New American, go to a couple of speeches given by Birchers and talk to a few members?...do some research...you might be surprised at what the JBS stands for.
--It's a McCarthyite word
word=phrase
My personal favorite was their claim that General Eisenhower was a Communist agent.
That's true. They aren't anti-semitic but they are not shy about using people who were or are. That's understandable though, just because a writer is anti-semitic doesn't necessarily discount everything they say. Heck, we'd pretty much have to write off every writer before WWII.
I'm no fan of the Birchers, but in fairness, anti-Semitism will get you thrown out of there faster than you can say Robert Welch. He expelled people for it himself. One such was the despicable Willis Carto, who went on to form Liberty Lobby.
Unfortunately, the Birchers adopting a cause tended to undermine it. You couldn't call for the impeachment of Earl Warren (which was richly deserved) because the Birchers, vocal support for that had successfully "kookified" it. The same, unfortunately, with "Get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US," a statement with which I wholeheartedly agree.
You know, I once did a fun excercise "proving" by the kind of "logic" that JBS uses that Robert Welch was a dedicated, conscious agent of the Communist conspiracy.
John Birch, funny name. Didn't they name a tree after him?
If you had to join one would it be the JBS or the ACLU????
At least the JBS is pro-American!
I certanly agree with that. Joe was doing a job that nobody else was willing to do and that needed to be done.
From my YAF days:
(To "The Yellow Rose of Texas")
Oh, Fighting Joe McCarthy
We're one and all for you.
You got the dirty Commies
And you'll get the pinkos too
Oh, Fighting Joe McCarthy
We're one and all for you.
Our land you'll save,
Our flag you'll wave
The dear red, white, and blue.
Now Fighting Joe McCarthy
Has gone to his reward
And now he's up in Heaven
Fighting Commies for the Lord.
Oh, Fighting Joe McCarthy
We're one and all for you.
Our land you'll save,
Our flag you'll wave
The dear red, white, and blue.
