D.C. schools salaries skyrocket

More than a dozen D.C. public school system central office administrators are taking home base salaries of at least $150,000 per year, compared with just one official earning that much two years ago, according to an analysis of payroll records. The salary information, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, shows 14 central administration officials receiving a base pay of at least $150,000 in fiscal 2006, including five officials making $170,000 or more. By comparison, pay records approved by the Board of Education in July 2004 show only one administrator -- former interim Superintendent Elfreda Massie -- earning at least $150,000. She was paid $175,000.

How many of the students in these administrators' schools are functionally illiterate? Unable to do simple math? Unable to identify Washington, D.C. on a map? I think these administrators' salaries should be tied to student performance. The former would go way down and the latter might rise a little.

Reduce the number and the salaries of the administrators. There are a lot of teachers who are just barely getting by, and a lot of schools that are substandard. Use the money for school repairs and supplies and/or to reward the outstanding teachers.

Most teachers (at least in the "old days") went into the profession because they loved kids and teaching. They knew they were never going to get rich from it. That should be true of administrators as well.

The District of Columbia should be the ideal of liberal Democratic policies. It's 90% Democratic and it is a nightmare of political disorder. This is what DC is like let's pretend it's a restaurant, OK? So, if you asked me how was that place, and I answered by saying, "Well, the service is dreadful, the food is awful, but the prices are enormous" you'd have a superb understanding of how DC works.

Thank God I live across the river in Virginia. At least here, the cops know where your house is and so do the firefighters.

Before someone state that 170,000 isn't that much by DC standards, trust me, it is...Fairfax County (in No. VA) is one of the wealthiest in the country, and the median HOUSEHOLD income there is only $85,000 per year.

Just wow. I know attorneys who don't make $170,000 in a year.

Audit Says Union Lost $5 Million To Theft
Teachers Group Sues Eight From D.C. Local

By Justin Blum
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, January 17, 2003; Page A01

An audit released last night alleges that more than $5 million was looted from the Washington Teachers' Union over the last seven years by union officials and others, an amount far greater than previous estimates of improper spending.

The audit, prepared by a private firm at the request of the union's parent, the American Federation of Teachers, said three former union officers -- president Barbara A. Bullock, her assistant Gwendolyn M. Hemphill and treasurer James O. Baxter II -- diverted the money to themselves, their relatives and others for personal benefit.

this is a gig I always wanted.
You get to under perform in the worst schools in the country and get raises while they have an incredible drop out rate.

I remember there were problems back in the late 90's when the new mayor (Williams) decided to stop paying all the school employees that received paychecks but never showed up to work. They lambasted him.
