Hostettler: Illegal immigrants hurting US

Stemming the tide of illegal immigration across U.S. borders is important to national security and causes a loss of jobs for American workers, U.S. Rep. John Hostettler said Monday during a town hall meeting in World Gospel Church in Terre Haute. "Illegal immigration hurts American workers. From 2000 to 2004, over half a million American jobs were lost. In 2004, there were more than half a million fewer native-born Americans employed than in 2000," said Hostettler, R-Blairsville, who is the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee for Immigration, Border Security and Claims. "It was not from a change in demographics, but rather there were a half million fewer jobs held by native-born American citizens. However, in the same time period there were over 2.2 million new jobs that were held by foreign-born workers," Hostettler said. Hostettler cited a net increase of about 1.7 million jobs, entirely the result of foreign-born workers, with half of those in the nation illegally, he said.

Here's the real problem with unlimited illegal immigration; it pulls the rug out from under the bottom half of our workforce. It used to be that landscapers, roofers, painters, cooks and others could make a reasonable living wage and support their families, perhaps not in luxury, but they could at least keep them fed, clothed and a decent roof over their heads. When you let in millions of illegals who will do these jobs for pennies on the dollar all of a sudden those American workers can no longer adequately support their families and guess what, we all end up paying for it. We pay for it in the form of welfare, unemployment, subsidized school lunches, increased crime, higher medical bills and insurance and thousands of other little ways as well.

Conservatives like to point to free markets and say that if the Mexicans can do the same job for less then the American workers were being overpayed and should get the training for a more advanced and higher paying job, but there's a problem with that. Much of our workforce isn't capable of doing the higher paying work. Not everyone can be a software programmer, medical technician or entrepreneur. We have to have some halfway decent jobs left for these Americans who aren't cut out for the bigtime. That is if we don't want to support them with handouts and jail cells.

Okay we may have many of the jobs but it isn't because we are stealing them from Americans it is that Americans believe they are to good to stand behind a McDonald's counter, Wash Cars, Sell tickets work at small Mom and Pop restaurants. Illegals don't come here because we can't get enough of the generations of Racism every other culture has been dealt they come not to stay but to make money and go back to their Countries where they are Land Owners, Doctors, Officials. Yet they come here and clean your car and say Thank you, while you just turn your nose. Every time I drive by the freeway I see an American who has papers, SocialSecurity number and have the Language acquisition, with their hand out begging for money to feed their families. Those people abuse the system they receive Federal and State Aid, and still beg for money because they are Americans and for some reason they can abuse the Tax system since Illegals pay taxes and never receive refunds. Let's see they pay for fake papers and yes they get paid less butthe underlining misconception is that they are paying to work literally. Yet they pay taxes and receive not type of Refund, they don't fight for that money they realize it is a small price to pay to be able to fed their families. Where do you think all that money generated and unclaimed goes to? The Government doesn't say oh no, we can't use this to our benefit because an illegal earned it? No they use it , expect it, and are angered that more of that money is being sent back to there countries to help there economy.If they are allowed to work they can support themselves, Now you said they can't support themselves on just any job..Many do and I believe as long as they are working the economy is reaping the benefits.

The other thing is many Americans used these jobs to work their way up the job ladder starting at the bottom rung. Illegals now have the jobs at the bottom rungs of the ladder. It is really hard to start the job ladder in the middle, it takes many more skills that many don't have.

My daughters had a very hard time getting jobs while in college. Typical jobs like waitress, motel maid, or even cashier jobs are taken by illegals here in the border area. We also have the added problem that in this area it is nearly impossible to get a job if you don't speak Spanish, they hire many that don't speak English, yet Spanish is required.

First of all it is not true that Americans won't do those jobs. Yes there are lazy Americans just as there are lazy people in every country. Most Americans are very hard working, if they weren't then how do they pay wages to illegals? Contrary to what some in other countries believe there are no money trees in America. Everything you see was built by hard working people, and we built most of it before we had illegals on every corner. To say Americans won't do those jobs or are too good to do those jobs is it's own brand of racism. There are no job Americans won't do, any hard, disgusting job you can think of Americans have done it, are doing it and will do it.

The United States cannot afford illegals. Many illegals do come here to stay and bring their families, many of those families end up on some sort of assistance. Illegals use hospital ERs for all medical care and no one wants to pay the bill for them so hospitals close. Programs have to be set up in schools for non-English speaking students and that is paid for by US taxpayers. Social services used by illegals are paid for by American taxpayers. If people from other countries want to come here to work, they need to do it legally.
