What do you do when it's your Daughter-in-Law, and the house is a pig sty....??? With cat poop in the clean clothes basket, a full cat box on the front porch to greet you when you arrive, or on the back porch baking in the sun......? And, the one bathroom (for 6 people) didn't get cleaned until around oh, 4 months or so....

Note: The DIL's Mother is the same way....

you have to start teaching them when they are young if you wait till they are 15 you've already lost.

my brother wanted me to take his kids when they became teenagers and started acting badly....

I said "no way" you want me to pay the price for you lack of parenting the last 15 years? forget it! you reap what you sow.

I have several kids younger than 4 that I can just look at the right way and they burst into tears, that's parenting.

The best thing to do is simply have a rule which says you have to keep the door to your room closed. I don't want to see it. If you like living in squalor that's fine. If you leave the room door open (and I don't care if you are 13 years old or 20 years old) you get grounded.

That's very nice for you. You have compliant children.

I could beat mine to death and they wouldn't care. It is a constant struggle to discipline a child who doesn't care about anything.

I was 18 when the Army removed me from home. After my discharge, I was invited to stay at home for a short period, but was charged rent. I was incensed, but paid it. I soon found a reason to leave permanently. Re-instate the draft and the problem of 18 plus kids at home would be solved. For the really messy kids, make sure they are inducted into the Marines. That's a swift cure for many bad behaviors.

You miss the point, they are compliant because I made them that way from the time they were born. My daughter had a stubborn streak a mile long from the time she was born, but I broke her of that before she was 2.

Most parents don't realize the mistake they've made until it's too late and their kids are teenagers and laugh at their feeble attempts to correct and control them.

If your children do not fear you, you have done something wrong.

I was a full time student until about 6 months before I moved out and except for my last year at school I always had a job and always paid rent.

I disagree...........if they do not respect you, you have done something wrong. There is a vast difference between fear and respect.

YOU miss the point. Not all children are the same.

My oldest child is bi-polar. I have struggled with him from the time he was a year old. The ONLY thing he has ever been afraid of was a cold shower. I had to reserve that for the big issues. He doesn't care about anything. Literally. Think about that. No motivators work. Spanking didn't work. If I wanted him in time out, I would have to sit on him to make him stay.

I am just thankful that after all my struggles he, and my girls are excelling in school, and that I get compliments on my their behavior when someone takes them out. I guess I, the rotten parent by your standards, will have to make do with that.

Just thank God you have "normal" children. Perhaps a trifle less arrogance might be in order.

If your 20 year old does not obey rules of the house because they are geting "older" are they asked to leave. As a regular course of maturing kids tend to want to start their own set of rules.

56 passages in the old and new testaments advise us to fear the Lord.

As Christians we are taught to fear God, the bible is very clear on this...

Respect is mentioned 16 times in the bible and almost always in relation to how children should respect their parents.

Fear elicits compliance... compliance shows respect. There is no respect without compliance between parent and child.

The relationship between God and his children (us) is the example we should strive for in our relationship with our own children.
