Is it a little early for these type of powerful Pacific storms?

The US has built levees to prevent such disasters. Australia may want a few...

Not if they don't work any better than ours. The Aussies had enough sense to flee to the interior when a Cat 5 storm approached. Plus they don't have any big Chocolate cities that are mostly below sea level.

Not south of the equator, if anything it might be a little late.

This is the southern hemisphere; it's the end of summer there. Precisely when they have the most cyclones.

Just to be accurate, and I'm not seeing any news articles pointing this out..

The Australian "Categories" for tropical cylones are NOT THE SAME as the Saffir Simpson Categories for Atlantic tropical cyclones.

It's actually quite complex as the Australians use a different time period average for sustained winds, etc., but in sum the criteria for Category 5 in Australia is lower than ours.

If Larry were in the Atlantic this would be a Category FOUR storm based on sustained winds.

Other thing to keep in mind is the Atlantic has unusually high central pressures for storms; for the same pressure, an Atlantic storm has higher winds than a storm near Australia, because the background pressures are lower there.

3/16 is the "equivalent" of 9/19 Down Under, so this should be the height of Cyclone Season.

A Queensland state police spokeswoman at Innisfail said three people had been reported injured so far in the storm, including a woman who was struck by flying glass and two others who were hurt after falling down.

I've had worse at parties in good weather. It'll take a lot more than that to beat the Aussies down.

Ya think there could be some white chocolate action going on? This, along with a Republican administration, may explain the lack of deceased...

I was about to blast you about the use of the word "chocolate" there, but then I realized you were quoting the Good Mayor Nagin!
