Police loosed water cannons and tear gas on rioting students and activists rampaged through a McDonald's and attacked store fronts in the capital Saturday as demonstrations against a plan to relax job protections spread in a widening arc across France.
The protests, which drew 500,000 people in some 160 cities across the country, were the biggest show yet of escalating anger that is testing the strength of the conservative government before elections next year.
At the close of a march in Paris that drew a crowd of tens of thousands, seven officers and 17 protesters were injured during two melees, at the Place de la Nation in eastern Paris and the Sorbonne University. Police said they arrested 156 people in the French capital.
Four cars were set afire, police said, and a McDonald's restaurant was attacked along with store fronts at the close of the march. Tensions escalated later Saturday as about 500 youths moved on to the Sorbonne, trying to break through tall metal blockades erected after police stormed the Paris landmark a week ago to dislodge occupying students. The university has become a symbol of the protest.

The new labor law just makes it less difficult to fire young employees. It still wouldn't be EASY to fire them, it just makes it NOT IMPOSSIBLE. It's such a sensible and reasonable law.
Students moan about how hard it is to get a job. Sounds like our college students who want, on leaving college, $100,000/year, one month vacation, all benefits and a position of authority, without the 60 hours/week work that it involves.
Those French SoreBun students MIGHT look to the unrestricted immigration (ahem) that they so voluably and violently backed as the source of some of their employment woes.
One knows just how sensible and reasonable a law it would be JUST by the volume of protest by students, always an "iffy" source of common sense.
The Paris protest march was the biggest, attracting some 80,000 people, according to police. Organizers put the number at 300,000.

Funny how they couldn't "gain control" over the "rioters" when they were just (Muslim) "youths" earlier when the "youths" torched over 10,000 cars in France.
I wonder how many "protesters" and "youths" would be out in the streets if the French police had the balls to just shoot a few of the leaders right from the start.
I don't know what gives anybody the "right" to destroy other people's property when they're uptight or angry and have their knickers in a twist about some imaginary slight.

I also noticed that the French Police got serious when the rioters are just plain old Frenceh youths. But when Muslim immigrants riot, then restriant is the order of the day. What a commentary.
