USS Ronald Reagan in Jebel Ali
Posted: Saturday, March 18, 2006
Dubai
US navy aircraft carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan, has arrived in the Dubai port of Jebel Ali.
The carrier's 4,800 crew members 'will have a chance to tour, shop, and enjoy liberty,' said a statement by the US Navy's Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain.
The 334-metre nuclear-powered vessel arrived in the Gulf last month to conduct maritime security operations in the region and 'support ground troops in Iraq,' said the statement.
'Visits to places like Jebel Ali and Dubai in the UAE are a great opportunity for our sailors to experience a culture much different from their own,' said Captain Terry Kraft.
'The UAE is an important ally in the region in supporting the efforts of coalition maritime forces who are supporting maritime security operations in the Arabian Gulf.'
The administration of US President George W Bush to smooth over ties with Dubai authorities after Congressional opposition forced the UAE government, which owns Dubai Ports World, to offload six US port operations it had acquired through its $6.9-billion takeover of Britain's Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P and O) in mid-February.

I am very glad that my fears were proven wrong and the UAE still maintain a great relation with us and most importantly with our military after all the Dubai Ports World fiasco and hysteria.

Travis McGee took Hildy and I out on his sailboat (which is pictured on his FR page) to greet the USS RWR on the day she sailed into her home port at north Island NAS in San Diego. It's a day I shall forever cherish.
I love that ship. The San Diego FR chapter are trying to arrange a tour of the ship when she returns home and I fully intend to fly out to join them.

I am sure that Sg. is a singularly boring place to port call.
Didn't used to be , but after the a-retentive ethnic Chinese got ahold of the place....

I visited the Yorktown once. It is on static display at Charleston.
