You realize, of course, that the moon has no permanently dark side. The dark side of the moon is like the dark side of the earth, only in temporary darkness.
The moon's rotational period is tidally locked to its orbital period, so that, on average, it keeps the same side (the near side) facing the earth. During a lunar month, the moon experiences one day.

True, but about 40 per cent of the moon's surface is never visible from Earth. I tried to explain this to an otherwise intelligent individual, to no avail. That's why the Soviet photos were so startling - the "dark side" is much different, far more craters and so on. Hm.
