AN Australian woman's boyfriend dismembered her and kept her remains at home with their children for two days before dumping them into a frozen lake in Sweden.
The mutilated remains of former Canberra resident and mother of two Nina Peltonen were found near the crime-ridden industrial town of Sodertalje last Tuesday.
Ms Peltonen's 31-year-old partner was charged with murder after he was spotted cutting a hole through the ice of Yngern Lake, south of Stockholm.
Last night, Ms Peltonen's family pastor, Jakka Tuovinen, told The Sun-Herald: "It is very hard to know what to say right now. This is a huge shock, a terrible thing that has happened."
Swedish police allege the killing took place last Sunday after a heated argument about finances, which ended when Ms Peltonen was struck over the head with a frying pan.
Prosecutor Cecilia Cassmer said she regained consciousness only to be fatally stabbed.
It was revealed that, after Ms Peltonen was killed, her partner bought an electric saw. He then cut her body into pieces in the family bathroom, leaving her remains inside the apartment where he remained with their two children for two days before driving to the lake.
The man is alleged to have confessed to the murder.
Following a closed hearing in a Stockholm court yesterday, the man's lawyer, Tomas Rothpfeffer, said the couple's relationship had been frail for a long time. The row was allegedly sparked by Ms Peltonen's frustration at not being able to buy a house.
Her partner had just been denied a mortgage due to a bad credit rating. He claimed she threatened to return to Australia with their two children, which was when he struck her.
Mr Rothpfeffer said the accused then dismembered the body to hide the crime.
"He panicked and thought 'Now I have to hide this.' "
The court ordered the suspect, who smiled at journalists in court, undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
It is understood Ms Peltonen grew up in the ACT and met her partner overseas. She moved with him to Sodertalje, about 40 kilometres south-west of Stockholm, three months ago so he could pursue academic interests.
The couple's children, aged 18 months and three years, were being looked after by social workers until arrangements could be made for their further care.
Last night, Sari Kamppi, a friend of Ms Peltonen from Canberra, told The Sun-Herald she was too upset to comment.
So what's the guy's name?
Mud.
Good question
Are you thinking it might be something starting with Mo- ...? I was!
Good question.
I guess if you smile at journalists, they won't print it.
Hardly panic when you go for the knife to finish the job.
Good question. Strange that wasn't mentioned. His name is Janne Tapio Tuomela.
Found his name here http://sundaytelegraph.news.com.au/story/0,9353,18516444-28778,00.html
"...crime-ridden industrial town of Sodertalje..."
There are crime-ridden towns in Sweden? I thought it was a socialist paradise. It says she met the hubster overseas, but where? Is he a swede? A member of the ROP? A violence prone American? Inquiring minds want to know!
Seriously, awful for the children, may God rest this poor woman's soul, and may stern justice be visited on the murderous husband.
Well, now that you mention it.... ; )
Wrong guess, per post 8. A Swedish psycho.
Ping to Post #11.
Janne Tapio Tuomela, note the guy's name is not Swedish, it's Finnish.

Yep, I just thought it really odd that the article didn't bother to mention the name (although it was revealed in another article.)
Thanks! A Finn and an Australian in Sweden ... it's a small world, after all.
