Political offensive targets Bush
The Washington Times ^ | 3/18/2006 | Rowan Scarborough

Senate Democrats have mapped a political battle plan for the March congressional recess that calls on lawmakers to stage press events with active duty military personnel, veterans and emergency responders to bash President Bush on virtually every one of his national security policies. The game plan, devised by the office of Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, is contained in a six-page memo distributed to Democratic senators on Thursday at a closed-door meeting at the Capitol and provided to The Washington Times by a congressional staffer. Titled "Real Security," the political document calls for staged town hall events at military bases, weapons factories, National Guard units, fire stations and veterans posts.

I thought their "plan" was to figure out a message on something.

Guess that failed, and the "plan" is what it always has been... hide who you really are and try to "imply" what you are too afraid to "say" (and would get you destroyed in elections)... by creating situations that exploit the military, confuse voters (as to their true feelings), and blow smoke / muddy waters.

"They found their Feb offense was energized by many on the right." Profound statement. So very true. Some hard nose Repubs have this passion for eating their own if they disagree with them. They cannot comprehend that people are conservative because they want some freedom to express themselves without being repressed by friendly fire. The DemocRATS all march to the same drummer never deviating from the worn out play book. Always repeating the same mistakes.

this should be named Operation Backfire because that's exactly what will happen. A few military men and women need to ask Reid and Co. why their party has called them terrorists, compared them to Nazis, and every other slanderous remark spewed for a dems mouth. It'd make for great tv.

We don't discuss conservative policy and conservative candidates because we are too busy trashing the 'Rats (too easy) and defending the President.

Have you ever tried to post an article or lead a discussion about particular conservatives or a particular subject? Or is complaining your forte? I have found Freepers more than willing to discuss almost anything.

However, if you consider any defense of Bush to be out of bounds then you are being unreasonable.

he made himself by ignoring the conservative agenda of the people who put him there.

He signed the Ban on Partial Birth. Furthermore, after it faced insurmountable leagal challanges, he wisely held it on a sidetrack until he named two new SCOTUS judges. THEN he put it back on a fast track to be heard.

Can you explain to all of us uneducated saps what the conservative position on that was?

Democrats are playing political hardball. So what else is new. LOL You are right. Even though Bush isn't much of a cosnervative, the leftwings attacks on Bush undermines conservatism.

>>>>Is there a Ronald Reagan anywhere?

What America needs is a conservative candidate whose more like Reagan. Cut taxes and reduce spending. Reagan proved it can be done. The Feds need to get their fiscal house in order and right now, I don't see anyone capable of getting the job done right.

In other words, lawmakers are going to get the troops into all manner of legal trouble under the guise of "supporting the troops."

They are targeting Bush and still have no agenda. The Dems are going to be slaughtered if they think they can win by just attacking Bush. It didn't work in 2004 and it won't work in 2006 povided Republicans don't fall all over themselves trying to run away from the President. The key to 2006 is for Republicans to present a unified front with a centerpiece conservative agenda that will get people out to the polls which will be critical to Republican success.

The Democrats still have the huge problem of not connecting with the people who they will need to vote for them until they fix that problem they will continue to lose as long as they have an opponent who is willing to fight.

The republicans will have a difficult time doing this. Their wasteful spending, new big government programs, and the lack of a meaningful domestic policy will make their efforts in the next 7 months seem phony.

IMHO, the election will hinge more on the price of gas this summer and fall than all the election year politicking the lobbyists money can buy.

yup, they lost the 2000 & 2004 & more house seats! Karl Rove couldn't ask for a better silver platter game plan!

You may have point but I don't think it is going to hinge on the Price of gas. I do think that has an effect but I think National security will trump that. Do conservatives really want to have control of the House or Senate fall back to the Democrats while the Iraq is going on with the possibility of a confrontation with Iran? I don't like the big spending policies of the Bush administration but I'll not be party to giving the President a defeat in the time of war. I'll not reward that cowards and traitors in the Democratic party after doing what they have to undermine our efforts in Iraq.

Juat a thought -- active duty military are NOT supposed to make political statments. You can't bad-mouth your CIC, or someone who could become your CIC.

Actually it is only recently that the military was encouraged to vote. (Most, especially officers didn't) Even privately their "unofficial" policy was to stay out of all politics.

The biggest push in history for the military vote was in 2000 & 2004. (It REALLY was Rove's strategy he knew that they REALLY REALLY REALLY hated Clinton, or Kerry and would vote for Bush - Rove made it a huge deal that every soldier had an absentee ballot)

I'd like to see what type of reception they will get at these staged events. I'm thinking that if they get ten servicmembers in the event they will have one hundred outside the event I think most of our soldiers are smart enough to know that most of the Dems really don't support them. Especially the career people (Senior NCOs and Officers).

"I don't think it is going to hinge on the Price of gas. I do think that has an effect but I think National security will trump that

Most Americans believe in National security. Most Americans also believe that the open border, amnesty plan that will become law this spring is a major threat.

Do conservatives really want to have control of the House or Senate fall back to the Democrats while the Iraq is going on with the possibility of a confrontation with Iran?

No, but we're talking about millions of citizens who are not quite as engaged in politics as you and I might be. To them, the price of gas and the influx of spanish-only speaking people is more of a real threat than who is the speaker of the house.

I don't like the big spending policies of the Bush administration but I'll not be party to giving the President a defeat in the time of war. I'll not reward that cowards and traitors in the Democratic party after doing what they have to undermine our efforts in Iraq.

Of course you won't. But the gop has only paid lip service to the concerns of the average American for quite a while now. The tiny "tax cut" they got was eliminated by the tax increases at the state and local level. The money it takes to fill up their car for work each week has doubled in the past 6 years, and they don't understand the math that suggests "adjusted for inflation" makes gas a bargain. Their heating bills have become overwhelming, and their kid's school in the suburbs doesn't offer transportation or sports anymore without the parents writing more checks. These people vote, and they've been taken for granted.

This is not about politics for them, it's their only chance to express their appreciation or their disgust with their elected representation.

So the gop wants to huddle together and find some way to assure the voters that everything is swell?

I'm not suggesting it can't be done, I just think our elected "leaders" will have a tough time winning hearts and minds in just over 7 months.
