And a Happy St Patrick's Day to all the fine denizens of the Freeper Canteen. Tonight for the Friday Flyby I have reached back into the archives and pulled out some pics of the Bell P-39 Airacobra.
The Airacobra and it's bigger cousin, the P-63 Kingcobra were the only single engine fighters of WW-II that had the engine mounted behind the pilot! An interesting idea that did not pan out due to the use of the Allsion engine without supercharging. On with the pics.

A P-39 pulling up the tricycle gear after takeoff.
The Brooklyn Bum the 2nd in flite.
The Soviets were a big user of the P-39. With it's nose mounted 37mm Oldsmobile cannon and various fittings of .30 and .50 caliber machine guns, the P-39 was a potent ground attack aircraft.
The P-39 Miss Connie at an airshow. Notice the automoblie type door for the pilot.
A line-up of P-39s, aka "Little Shaver" in the colors of the Soviet Air Force awaiting delivery during WW-II.
