March 17, 2006: Documents confirm Saddam Hussein government knew Zarqawi headed Al Qaeda cell in Iraq in August 2002
Documents released Thursday by the US government show that less than a year after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, Saddam Husseins government had identified at least one active Al Qaeda cell in his country.
Among the Iraqi documents collected by U.S. intelligence during the Iraq war amd released Thursday is a document, released only in Arabic, which the US government describes as follows:
2002 Iraqi Intelligence Correspondence concerning the presence of al-Qaida Members in Iraq. Correspondence between IRS members on a suspicion, later confirmed, of the presence of an Al-Qaeda terrorist group. Moreover, it includes photos and names.
A translation of the document shows that the Al Qaeda terrorist that Saddam Husseins government had identified was none other than Abu Musab al Zarqawi, who emerged as one of the leading terrorists in post-Saddam Hussein Iraq.
The document, dated August 17, 2002, identifies the Al Qaeda member as Ahmed Fadil Nizal Al Khalaylah, the real name of Zarqawi, and includes a series of photos of Zarqawi. (See link at http://fmso.leavenworth.army.mil/documents-docex/Iraq/ISGZ-2004-019920.pdf)
A memo within the document shows that as early August 8, 2002, Zarqawi was identified as a member of Tanzeem al Qaeda, or the Al Qaeda Organization.
This document provides startling documentation that at the very least that Saddam Husseins government knew that Al Qaeda was active and functioning in Iraq.
Although the document goes on to outline activities of the group, there is no indication that the Iraqi government took any steps to stop Al Qaeda from operating within Iraq, in clear defiance of international law.
Better be careful using the words clinton and orally in the same sentence....
Major kudos to FReepers jveritas and stillproud2befree.
Exposing the truth - one document at a time. :-)
This info needs to come from the Government, not bloggers. If the blogs are the information dispensers, it will gain no leverage.
"Will someone out there tell the Bush administration that as enough of these documents start rolling out that it might be a wise idea to hold a live address and put forward the evidence themselves instead of relying on the media to distort it"
this sounds like a good idea
Ahmad Fadil Nazal AL Khalayla, the real name of Zarqawi.
Most Presidents might do just that. Fortunately, we have a Prez that cares more about gittin er done than about polls and uneducated opinions. No matter what he comes out and says, the Dims/MSM smear machine will come out and spread lies about it. Some things just need to be trusted by faith and I believe that our National Security is in competent hands with Bush at the helm. Yes, even though I wish something needs to be done about the borders, which I also believe are under more scrutiny than most of us could ever guess at. If they're so under-protected, one must wonder why they haven't been exploited to the point of us suffering another big attack. We've only heard of a few cases where they stopped/picked up "persons of interest" and I'll wager that more have been stopped and that we have a lot more knowledge about the bad guys than most of us will ever know. The more the Prez tells us about what he knows, the more likely the Dims/MSM will find some way to make even more known to the terrorists as a part of their treasonous "It's the People's right to know" subterfuge.
Any ideas why the different names? I does it signify something?
Sorry for the typos, I have too many browsers open :P
I mean does it signify something?
bttt!
He was born in Zarqa, Jordan so he took the alias Zarqawi.

Ah. Thanks Vel! I love that site Tracking the Threat. Ironically I never looked up the well known ones there. I've used it to look up the terrorists that never make the news.
:)
I never realized that. I'm going to be poking around in Tracking the Threat to see who else took their names from where they are from.
Thanks :)
Thanks....
Thank you.
Bump.
I stopped believing or respecting (not that I ever did).for ABC News...during the debates or convention when the e-mail from Mark Halperin to the ABC reporters..
to "talk up" Kerry and the dems MORE than Bush and the GOP.
Now, I see they just can't help themselves...they even had to put a disclaimer on this story...basically saying that though they are reporting this, don't believe it..grrrrr
Nice ping. Thanks.
I'm glad it's making Blogs, and MSM. They won't be able to ignore all of it.
