Along with the ABC's, kindergartners will now learn about HIV. Beginning Monday, kindergartners in public schools will be told that HIV is a "germ" and "not easy to get."
The kids also will learn that HIV could lead to AIDS, which is hard to "get well" from, according to the city's new HIV/AIDS curriculum.
The changes are required by state law - but some parents and teachers fear kindergartners are too young to talk about the deadly disease.
"I don't think it is appropriate. It's scary for kids in kindergarten," said a Manhattan mom whose daughter attends kindergarten at Public School 166 on the upper West Side.
"How do you talk about AIDS without talking about sex and drugs?" she asked.
Elementary school teachers in all grades have been instructed to teach beginning next week from the updated lessons, which include a project that tells kindergartners to play "doctors" and discuss HIV.
Teachers won't mention that HIV is transmitted through sexual contact until students reach the fourth grade. At that time, teachers will provide little specifics, telling kids, "When you are older you will learn more."
Many parents got letters this week from their children's schools alerting them to the changes. Parents can opt their children out of the mandatory HIV discussion by writing a letter to the principal.
School officials said they have been required to teach students about HIV and AIDS for the past decade, but the specific language in the new lessons was created in December.
"The curriculum is absolutely developmentally appropriate and contains positive messages about staying healthy," said Education Department spokeswoman Kelly Devers.
Still, some elementary school teachers said they don't think students younger than 8 will understand what they are being told about the fatal virus.
"You can tell a second-grader there are different illnesses, colds and viruses, and they'll understand. But they don't understand the difference between cancer and HIV," said a fourth-grade teacher in Queens.
A third-grade teacher in Manhattan plans to ignore the new curriculum.
"They might understand to some extent," the teacher said. "But in kindergarten and first grade, it's impossible."

DISCUSSION ABOUT:
"Crayons, snacks ... & HIV (Kindergartners will learn about virus come Monday)"
It is impossible to discuss AIDS prevention with anybody without discussing the how the HIV virus is transmitted. This is what is so despicable, they want these five year olds to ask how someone catches AIDS.
There is absolutely no provision for public education in the US Constitution and I think it's time to look at ending federal funding. Any parent who has the means and does not send their children to private schools or homeschool them really needs to look at their priorities. If the left succeeds in brainwashing our children, our society is doomed.

Two words. Home School.

Un-freakin-believable!
Time to push for School Vouchers!!!! Time of for someone to be held accountable with OUR money!!
I agree with your comments at least 100%.
To which the reply must be "You get it by being around someone who calls themselves "gay" or "homosexual"
Lets get back to shunning the sexual perverts they should be.
(In the spirit of open and honest disclosure. I have a 5 year old daughter and a brother who chooses to engage in homosexual behavior. She has spent less than 48 hours (lifetime total) in his company (Always under strict and close supervision). And those hours only because it was unavoidable)
The third law of homosexuality:
Any exposure of children to homosexual behavior is child abuse
No, it isn't. Can you spell a-g-e-n-d-a?
I hope all parents will opt out of the program.
So they're telling these children all about HIV but not informing them how its transmitted? Great, this opens yet another door to blame something on Cheney. I tell ya that Dick Cheney! Maybe they can discuss this with them over a round of scotch.
Yeah... ok. We all know how that works out (ask David Parker).
As a school nurse, I teach students in every grade (K-12) about universal precautions and preventing the spread of infection. I don't discuss HIV with a classroom of students below grade 6. As I am required to instruct all students about bloodborne pathogens, I fullfill this requirement by teaching elementary-school students to never touch "anything that comes out of someone else's body", such as saliva, blood, vomit, urine, etc. There is no need to discuss sex; all I tell them is that there are germs that can be passed by coming into contact with another person's blood or body fluids. That's all they need to know, and is pretty much the limit of their understanding when you're talking about kindergarteners anyway. And I don't have to have a consent signed by the parent to teach that.
Telling kindergartners about HIV without telling them "how" it's contracted, and that "it's not easy to get" isn't surprising to me. My children have been in public school since kindergarten and they are in a small minority when it comes to political views. It's another way of dumbing down society starting with the youngest educated citizens. LMAO...now that's a plan!
You know, the logic these people use and the protection and advancement they receive from these lib groups like the NEA and the ACLU is truly mind boggling. They should really consider also teaching driver's ed to these kids right after the HIV lesson and have Ted Kennedy teach it.
