A first-year teacher is out of a job for using "vulgar and inappropriate sexual language," according to Brevard County school officials.
The School Board dismissed Bayside High math teacher Sylvester Jones for violating the district's code of ethics during a confrontation with students three weeks ago. School officials said Jones read a note passed between students before he made the inappropriate remarks.
Thirteen students gave consistent accounts of Jones' comments at Tuesday's board meeting, but Jones said the students misinterpreted his response, which was meant "to get down on their level" and "capture their attention."
Jones said he plans to appeal the firing and wants to continue teaching in the district.

There are a few interesting twists to the story that should play out over time. First, the language used by the teacher was supposedly verbatim from the note he intercepted in class, a note about him. Second, he is not a career teached but instead entered the profession through an engineer-to-teacher transition program. Third, Bayside is a new school but already has a reputation of being a rough one. Fourth, he is black (mentioned only in anticipation of the race card being played at some point down the line).

Note to new teacher: Never even give the appearance of sinking to their level. They can get away with it. You can't.

"Class, I am paid a nice salary. What I have been hired to do, is to educate you and help you become intelligent adults. In other words, to bring you up to my level, or the level of any intelligent adult.
But, class, I'm not capable of doing that. So, Yo! I be down at yo' level! Damn! Let's rock on, dude!"

If you have asked to be added to this list, and havent been receiving the pings, please let me know. Ive had a problem with my file synchronization between my home and work computer, and apparently have lost some names on the list. I think I have the problem fixed, and will gladly re-add your name.
