Tom Cruise Blackmails Comedy Central Over Scientology South Park
The Post Chronicle ^ | 03/17/2006 | Tashi Singh

Tom Cruise reportedly got Comedy Central to cancel Wednesday night's cablecast of the controversial "South Park" episode about Scientology by warning that he'd refuse to promote "Mission Impossible 3," reports today's Page Six.

Paramount, the film company who holds Cruise's contract, is counting on "MI3" to bring in blockbuster profits this summer, and Paramount is owned by parent company Viacom, which so happens to also own Comedy Central.

The "South Park" episode entitled, "Trapped in the Closet," takes jabs at Scientology and shows Cruise, John Travolta and R. Kelly (who is not a Scientologist, but has a song called "Trapped in the Closet") literally in a closet.

The episode, which first aired last November, was suppose to rerun on Wednesday night, but was mysteriously yanked at the last minute.

Hollywoodinterrupted.com reports that Cruise went straight to the top - to the execs at Viacom - and warned he'd boycott the promotion for "MI3" unless the "South Park" episode was pulled, reports Page Six.

Richard Johnson has the details: 'Series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have been told not to discuss the matter - to avoid embarrassing Cruise as they did Isaac Hayes last week when Hayes, also a Scientologist, quit his role as the voice of the Chef character.

Hayes claimed he couldn't stand by while "South Park" made fun of religion, but Stone pointed out that Hayes had cashed plenty of checks while the show made fun of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Stone hinted that Hayes was pressed to quit by his minders in the Church of Scientology.

Don't understand why comedy central gave into this buffoon, it's not like he makes good movies and, who actually pays money to go see his movies?????

Yes, they should have, but they didn't remind of of contractual obligations, did they? They just caved. My family of guys will undoubtedly see this in DVD, but at least not at the movies. No way.

I hope Haye's replacement is good. The difference between teh old and new Flinstone voices is disatrous. Chef's voice is an integral part of the character.

Just Tim Cruise and Scientology proving it's unbiased stand for tolerance and diversity. Can't have anyone making a jab about Scientology, we only can make jabs at Christians. Remember this, Hollywood.

Actually I fully expect Matt & Trey to Kill Chef off.

I also fully expect to see "South Park" off of Comedy Central and showing up on some other network soon. I don't see Parker and Stone letting this one go.

Comedy Central is slowly falling apart, first the screw up and blow the Chappell Show, now they are working hard to lose the one show on their network that has an audience. Stupid stupid stupid.

Is it unChristian of me to pray Tom Cruise gets hit by a bus in the near future.

Far and Away (or something like that) was the only good flick ever made by Cruise ... and the only good flick made by Kidman.

It was all downhill from there.

No Irish Scientologist back then.

It sounds like Comedy Central got their marching orders from Viacom.

I read somewhere about a year ago that this Scientology cult is and/or are making moves to buy up a lot of production rights and studio lots so they can make movies to indoctrinate the public....no difference between the Muslims and these Scientology nuts IMHO.....

My sister has been a Scientologist for more than 20 years. She's in Clearwater right now. She stopped by my home for a visit on her way, and mentioned she'd be coming back through three weeks later. It has been over five months and she's still down there. With her seniority status, I assume she's a brainwasher rather than a brainwashee.

She's a lovely, successful businesswoman (how her business withstands these long absences is beyond me); however, she is incredibly defensive when one speaks negatively about the cult.

The scum at Scientology are just like the Muslims. They can't take the heat that real religions do. And Scientology loves to sic their lawyers on you same as CAIR and other Islamic fruit loops

Something weird is going on with Cruise. I mean weirder than normal. Cruise and Travolta have been Scientologists forever. Travolta was always talking about it. Cruise never discussed it publically much at all. I remember when Battlefield Earth came out, and Cruise refused to comment on it publically. Travolta was busy yapping his gums at how brilliant L. Ron Hubbard was. Then, the last two years or so, ever since Cruise divorced Nicole Kidman, he has become Super Scientologist. I am wondering if the church has some dirt on him.

The thing that surprised me most in this article is learning there is going to be a MI III. Mission Impossible II was so mindbendingly bad I thought that series was dead and buried. I seem to recall something like a guy doing a headstand on a motorcycle while it was doing a wheelie, holding an Uzi in each hand and shooting out cars coming from opposite directions - lots of realistic stuff like that. It was much more of a cartoon than South Park could ever be.
