One day after critical talks on the rebuilding effort at ground zero collapsed, the Pataki administration said yesterday that it would not reopen negotiations with the developer Larry A. Silverstein. It challenged him to start building the $2.3 billion Freedom Tower next month or "move out of the way."
The challenge came 12 hours after the abrupt breakdown of talks that had sought to resolve issues hindering the development of ground zero, where the sputtering efforts to develop the site of the Sept. 11 attack have become a glaring embarrassment for the city and state.
Facing a self-imposed midnight deadline, advisers to Gov. George E. Pataki negotiated for nearly 16 hours Tuesday trying to reach a deal in which Mr. Silverstein, who holds the lease for the site, would surrender control of the Freedom Tower and a second building to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the site's owner. That would have paved the way for an April groundbreaking for the Freedom Tower, the largest and most symbolic of five skyscrapers planned for the site.
The failure of the talks is just the latest problem to arise over plans to rebuild the World Trade Center site, from the fight over the original design to the dispute over a planned cultural center to fund-raising problems for a memorial, as well as continuing doubts of some critics as to whether the Freedom Tower is even a good idea.
At the center of it all is Mr. Silverstein, who, despite responding yesterday that he would still begin building next month, has not convinced...

I can't stand Donald Trump but I think he has the wherewithal from a personality standpoint to rebuild, financially he may need partners.
The Freedom Tower is disgusting in the shadow of was once there. It just doesn't compare. The WTC was something bold and majestic and built during a decade when bold and majestic things in this country were not in vogue.
The memorial on that link someone provided is better than any I've seen. I love the idea of the rebuiling and putting up the remaining walls of the original as a surrounding feature of the memorial.
I think that construction should have began 2+ years ago on something. The fact that this is still an empty pit should be an embarassment to the country, state and city.
Hideous.
In 2004, Democrats stole the Washington governorship by recounting the ballots (three times) until the results flipped to give the seat to Gregoire. The national GOP grabbed its ankles instead of making a federal court challenge to this travesty.
In 2000, a dead man won a U.S. Senate seat because Democrat state judges kept the polls open in the St. Louis slums long past the statutory closing time. Ashcroft was told not to challenge this fraud b/c it would interfere with the Bush/Gore debacle being fought out in the courts. This is the same reason why fraud in S.D. and N.M. involving voting on Indian reservations (including exchanging clothes for votes) was not challenged by the GOP.
In 2000, Al Gore carried Pennsylvania because of the Philly Democrat machine. This included small claims court judges (district justices) issuing orders to illegal aliens on Election Day that permitted them to vote.
In 1996, Loretta Brixey (who retook her hispanic surname "Sanchez" for election purposes) 'beat' Republican Congressman Bob Dole by 984 votes...votes that were undoubtedly cast by Mexican illegals when one takes a look at the tally. The spineless GOP in the House refused to recognize the fraud for what it was...better to be diverse than support a conservative.
Never underestimate the Democrats ability to steal elections nor the willingness of their GOP counterparts to let them do so.
They're better partners than Germans or Arabs.
Look again. LOL.
THIS year??? Oh, my!

The picture's a joke. The situation is hideous. Nevermind. My apologies.

OK. Color me uninformed. Frankly, I am tired of rectangular boxes. They bore me. They are a cliche. They dull the senses. I want more interesting shapes. It can be done, it has been done, it should be done, again. One, two, three, many Chrysler Towers. Cheers.
I would prefer a design that looks like 4 fingers raised in the sky, three of them bent down, as in the picture.
Otherwise, I entirely agree with you. What else can we expect from design commissions, and political delusions? At least the night light replication of the two towers was eerie and clever. Otherwise, it's best just not to look.
LOL. I finally get the joke. It was too subtle for me. But then I am getting old, and losing my mental agility. I hate that. I want to sue someone.
Give it to Trump, I agree....you know it will get done...Let one of the apprentices be in charge of it.
LOL. Blame it on Peyton, sue him in fact ... he posted the thing.
Silverstein is trying to bleed the Port Authority dry....screw that clown, he made enough money off 9/11.
And he can pay his rent!
He's stalling. He senses we're at the top of the real estate market.
