THE world's most powerful woman, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, will present a gold medal at tonight's swimming finals.

Games chairman Ron Walker has asked Dr Rice to present the medals for the women's 50m breaststroke final, one of five finals on the night.

America's chief diplomat arrives in Melbourne late today after two days of talks in Sydney with counterpart Alexander Downer and Prime Minister John Howard.

A police motorcade will escort her from the airport to the Sports and Aquatic Centre, where she will enjoy front row seats.

Remarkable. Quite a contrast from the parade of feminist peaceniks who opened the Italian Olympics.

I wish Condi could have done a stint at DoD...those are the kind of medals she should bear the burden of giving out.

IMHO, Condi is a comer but she needs to see the enemy from a perspective other than that of Dept. of State.

I think she might be the American Maggie Thatcher...but Condi needs more than what the State Department can offer (in terms of experience). Diplomacy is almost irrevelent in WWIV. Savvy is in great demand.

The very fact that Bush put her into State raises questions as to his understanding of the situation.

I like what she has done so far. The had required State bureaucrats to learn relevant foreign languages (like Farsi, Pashtun, or Arabic) and to be stationed away from the fleshpots of western Europe, if they want to get promoted.

The people who do good work in the hellholes of the world deserve recognition. The people on permanent vacation in civilized pary positions shouldn't get promoted.

Makes sense to me.

I consider her position as National Security Advisor to be non-diplomatic experience.
