Well, I guess it had to happen. Several weeks after writing my “Queer Muhammad” column, I finally got a call from a Muslim extremist – one who mostly shouted at me over the phone in broken English.

ME: Yes, give me another sentence. I have to go to class in ten minutes. What can I do for you?

MF: You write the column on the “Queer Muhammad.”

ME: Yes, that’s me. Did you enjoy the “Queer Muhammad”?

MF: No. No. I did not enjoy it.

ME: Well, that’s too bad. Did you read it on the internet?

MF: No. It was in the paper I read it. The Boston paper.

ME: I see. They’re running my column in Massachusetts. Now, that’s progress. Maybe it’ll run in Cuba before long.

MF: You are an educated man. Surely, you know Muhammad was not queer. How could a man with education write such a disgusting column? Disgusting! Muhammad is a great prophet. He has over billion followers around the world.

ME: Well, sir, did you actually read the column? I didn’t say that Muhammad was a queer.

MF: Yes. I read it. I read it. Disgusting column!

ME: Well, first let me warn you that you are speaking to me on an American university telephone. If you keep yelling, someone might overhear you and charge you with a hate crime. Your suggestion that being a queer is disgusting is actually offensive to most American professors. How long have you been in the country?

MF: You call Muhammad queer. You have no right. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT!

ME: Well, no sir, I didn’t say that. Could you please try to control your emotions? You aren’t queer by any chance, are you?

MF: (YELLING INDISCERNABLY).

There are extremely few Christians--especially Evangelicals thereon. And fewer conservatives who are mostly silent.

There are a LOT of lurkers--many of whom seem to read a lot of the threads I start. But the idiots are rabid and aplenty. Thankfully, their arguments are mostly as stupid as they seem to be--though most of them are really moderately bright.

Any help available is MOST WELCOME!

I think it's wise for us to spend SOME time preaching to other than the choir on our beloved site. SOME of the folks on these other sites are enough moderate or enough fence sitters that we CAN influence their votes.

Just this past couple of weeks I was shocked to discover that a flaming liberal administrator at the college is extremely hostile to Shrillery and Billdo Klintoon.

He had traveled to some counselor's conference in Arkansas and discovered some truth about the murderous duo. He recognizes that Shrillery is extremely bad news.

So, sometimes, allies may be where we least expect them but we need to connect and strengthen their understandings of the truth.

While I applaud your efforts at enlightenment, I tried that sort of thing before and, for a short time, after 9/11.

It was such a waste of time. Every commonsensical statement, replete with citations and lacking ad hominum, was met with threats, mischaracterizations, condescension and, well, you know the limited gamut of such encounters.

In all that time, I still correspond with an old-fashioned classical liberal. Over eight years, I would say that he has moved from moderately left of present-day center to just a tad to the right, on some, narrowly defined issues. Eight interminable years of baby steps. However, he and his family are basically good people, bright and interesting, so the friendship has continued.

One thing he has definitely come to understand is what he calls "this despicable religion." Five years ago, all he could muster was anger at the specific individuals who flew the planes into the towers. However, he is still conflicted about war.

Just wanted to support your efforts. My husband is involved with a nonpolitical site that is bombarded with progressives, and spends a lot of time writing excellent refutations of their ideology. I sometimes help him with research, but I just cannot engage with the other side any longer. It just makes my gorge rise.
