Jesus would vote for us, says Greens

Jesus Christ would vote for the Australian Greens in the South Australian election, the party says.
In a veiled shot at Christian party Family First, Greens candidate Mark Parnell said if Jesus was voting at Saturday's state election, he would not choose a party that discriminated against people on the basis of sexuality or religion.
Mr Parnell also criticised Labor's policy to publicly name and shame young offenders and said Jesus would not support "simply writing them off as worthless reprobates".
Nor would Jesus vote for the Democrats, with their dirty campaign tactics and undermining of others to get ahead in the polls, Mr Parnell said.
"The politics of fear, division, bigotry and negative campaigning perpetrated by a number of the other parties are un-Christian and totally out of step with Jesus' emphasis on peace, love and compassion," he said.
"The teachings of Jesus Christ stress compassion, tolerance, concern for the poor, non-violence and care for the earth.
"These are the very same principles that underpin the existence and policies of the Australian Greens."
The Greens decision to ask the electorate who Jesus would vote for follows a similar tactic by the Australian Democrats, who recently claimed former SA Labor premier Don Dunstan would vote for the Democrats - and not Labor - if he was alive.

I don't recall Jesus ever endorsing homosexuality, abortion or Islam. You'd have to look pretty hard in the Bible to find evidence for such a claim.

Yeah, I seem to recall one Greenie in particular having a certain stand about a specific Christian prayer.

LOL! You just have to laugh at these characters sometimes!

That is a lie! Jesus would not vote for the Greens!
Jesus would, of course vote for the Democrats. That is where all the self respecting dead people vote.
There. Now I have offended everyone.

These fools only look at one side of His teachings....and ignore all else. I doubt if any of them have ever read the new testament in its entirety.
And for the life of me, how do they get the enviro wacko angle for Christ?

This is really a bogus question. I don't think Jesus would vote - he clearly admonishes his people not to be involved in the affairs of the world.
To: Aussie Dasher
There was a reason Jesus didn't come as a king, politician, warrior, or any other man of "stature and power". Those people are irrelevant to what he was trying to teach, except maybe to show that it was actually politicians who allowed him to be killed due to political pressure.
I also find it interesting that when told he must pay taxes, he had an apostle go down to the water, catch a fish, and in it was the amount needed to pay his taxes. If that doesn't tell these politicians what he thinks of them and their importance, I don't know what does.
Jesus wouldn't vote for anyone. That would be an aknowledgement that they were greater than he. And the fact that a politician would say he would vote for them, shows how arrogant they are to believe that he needed them for anything.
What a joke.

I don't think Jesus would vote - he clearly admonishes his people not to be involved in the affairs of the world. He said, "Give to Ceasar what is Ceasar's and give to God what is God's." As citizens of a Constitutional Republic (not a democracy), we owe civic responsibility to our country. This means voting, running for office, and supporting positions we believe are best for our country.

Of course, when they say Jesus, they mean the guy who works over at the local Taco Bell.

It sounds as though Aussie libs are no different from American libs in this one fundamental point: they do not understand Jesus.
Mr Parnell also criticised Labor's policy to publicly name and shame young offenders and said Jesus would not support "simply writing them off as worthless reprobates".
May I suggest that it's best to understand what you're criticizing before doing so. Over one-hundred different English versions of the Bible currently available, millions upon millions of them in print--and this guy is clueless.

Yes, to be "in the world but not of it." We are not to be consumed in these things, but ought to participate in them--especially civic responsibilities like voting.
The example you cited from Matthew and Mark is the quintessential one. Jesus is asked by the Pharisees and Herodians whether they ought to pay taxes. The important point that many--not familiar with Roman customs--miss is that Jesus asked whose image was on the denarius, which is to point out the practice of emperor worship in the Roman Empire. Rendering unto Caesar is then paying the tax required of you, but not paying service to the emperor in worship; giving to God what is God's.
The underlying point is this: to whom do you owe your allegiance, first and foremost?

The single thing I admire most about what has been attributed to Jesus was HIS great disdain of Hypocrites.
