I wonder if the Hamms of the world would "stand their ground" if a member of their own family were robbed, raped or murdered?

Funny how reality has a way of changing your opinion on things. I wonder how many of the anti-gun political crowd have armed Secret Service agents protecting them.

Kopel doesn't sound like he's representing anything conservative in this hatchet-job.

If this had a shred of truth to it, how the hell did Al "mental health" gore nearly take that state? This line looks like a desperate attempt to get Florida to stop proving the left wrong.

David Kopel, research director of the conservative Independence Institute think tank in Golden, Colo., compared "Stand Your Ground" legislation to the concealed carry permit law Florida adopted in 1987.

"If a gun law doesn't lead to disaster in Florida, people tend to think it'll be fine in their state as well," Kopel said.

It's just an awkward choice of words. I don't believe there was an intent to malign Florida. It a poor way of describing Florida's potential for political possibilities. Florida proves that it can be done without all the "blood in the streets" that the gungrabbers try to scare everyone with. David Kopel is a good guy.

Anti-gun for thee but not for me. The arrogance never ceases to amaze.

Most jurisdictions, unless a statute says otherwise, have a "duty to retreat law" because it has been a common law rule for a long time. The "victim" is supposed to retreat if he reasonably believes he can do so and remain unharmed. Some jurisdictions add "if he reasonably knows a safe route out of the dwelling." It's my understanding that these "stand your ground" / "castle doctrine" laws are in response to this duty to retreat rule. Although the local DA wouldn't prosecute you for shooting an intruder in many states, he might in lots of other jurisdictions (which is one reason all states need this law). Not to mention that many state courts have upheld civil suits that award outrageous (of course in this situation, any award is outrageous) damage awards to the attacker who was "injured" when the victim protected himself. The success of the law in Florida is just another reason to join & support the NRA if at all possible!

The sound of the slide jacking a round of 00 into my 12 gage is about all the warning a smart perp should need.

That is, if he can hear it over the sound of big dogs loudly barking.

"I don't think too many people in office are particularly enthusiastic about this legislation," said Robert Batey, a professor at Stetson University's College of Law and a critic of the bills. "I think they simply don't want to cross the NRA."

Why would they be afraid of crossing the NRA? Could it possibly be that the members of the NRA are the people that the office holders are supposed to represent? Or are they afraid of losing campaign dollars?

PA is considering such a law. Yesterday there was a rally for the law at the state capitol building in Harrisburg. It was attended by some citizens for the law and by quite a few state representatives for the law. It was televised last night on the PCN channel (PA Channel Network). Larry Pratt was there, along with people from the Allegheny Sportsman's League, the PA Gun Owner's Association (PGOA) and several other pro-gun organizations.

Critics charge that such bills send the message that violence is OK.

No, the bills send the message to crooks that self-defense is now allowed. Liberal idiots nowadays find themselves unable to tell the difference between violence and self-defense, which is why they are always on the defensive politically.

It is just a lib's way of refusing to admit that a majority of people don't think the way he does. Blame someone/something else for his being out of the mainstream.

And, when a lib is forced to admit that, he rationalizes by saying that all those people that disagree with him are deluded or stupid.

When is the last time you heard a lib say "Well, I guess I was wrong"?

Obscure magazines? That reminds me of a funny line from comedian Dave Attell.

He refers to "Tada!" a magazine by and for gay magicians.
