GLENS FALLS, N.Y., March 13—The Republican Party's carousel-ride search for a challenger to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton made its latest stop here Monday night, as a new candidate, Kathleen Troia McFarland, appeared for the first time at an event with the other G.O.P. candidate, John Spencer, the former mayor of Yonkers.
With eight months to go before the election and Mrs. Clinton sitting on a comfortable lead in the polls, the two candidates focused on simply introducing themselves to roughly 150 voters in the crowd in brief speeches and question-and-answer sessions.
"I will run on the same principles I watched Ronald Reagan run on, which is lower taxes, less government and a strong national defense," said Ms. McFarland, 54, who was a Pentagon spokesman during the Reagan administration. She has been a stay-at-home mother for 20 years.
Mr. Spencer, 59, contrasted his right-of-center message with Mrs. Clinton's. "I just give the polls and the pundits the back of my hand," he said. "I know this myth that's out there that Mrs. Clinton cannot be beaten is just that, a myth."
While Mr. Spencer is against abortion, affirmative action and gun control, Ms. McFarland, of Manhattan, is a self-described "liberal Republican." She was mostly assured in her appearance and fell back on her defense experience for her first question from the crowd: would she have voted for the Iraq war?
"I'm sure I probably would have voted for that resolution," she said. "I didn't have access to the classified information, so I'm a little awkward assessing exactly how I would have looked at that."
She said that she still supported the war, but that she would have followed up before it started on suggestions by top military commanders that as many as half a million troops were needed. "Ultimately, we only..."

Come to think of it, missus clinton isn't ready for prime time, either... but then she doesn't have to be. She avoids prime time like the plague and the clinton toadies in the press let her get away with it.
