Cumberland Co. Mother Shoots Home Intruder, Authorities Say
WRAL ^ | March 14, 2006

EUREKA SPRINGS, N.C. -- A Cumberland County mother shot and killed an apparent home intruder Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The shooting happened on the corner of Eloise Street and Charles Avenue near Fayetteville, where investigators said, a man kicked in the front door of the house, possibly to burglarize the house. The woman, Crystal Strickland, 23, then shot the man, investigators said.

They said Strickland was inside the house when she heard tapping on an outside window. When she went to investigate the noise, she either saw or heard the intruder, who was armed, trying to kick in the front door, authorities said. Strickland then got her gun, shots were exchanged and the intruder was hit.

The intruder, whose name was not released, left the scene in critical condition, but died shortly before arriving to a local hospital.

Authorities said Strickland told them that she did not know the intruder and, at this point, believe the shooting to be a case of a mother trying to protect her children.

Strickland, who is 9 months pregnant, has two other children: one 3 years old and another 1 year old.

Of course the MSM will trumpet this as "another tragic gun death" if they mention it at all.

That's what I love, you'd think these dumbass criminals have never heard of a firing rang.

They watch too much TV, and like the gun grabbers, they think a gun is a magic talisman, just needing to be waved around like a wand to have the desired effect. The woman, OTOH, apparently understands that a gun is only a tool, and one that requires some degree of actual skill, obtained by practice, to use properly.

She certainly seemed to have the skill.

Score one for the good gals.

I hope it hurt.

he intruder, whose name was not released, left the scene in critical condition, but died shortly before arriving to a local hospital.

Believe me, it hurt, he was likely screaming all most of the way to the hospital. He was real quiet when he arrived however. Real, real quiet.

There is another thread up about a store owner shooting a robber. What kills me are these left wing nut jobs who think that outlawing guns is the answer. I have been in Law-enforcement for 20 years in both California (Bay area and Los Angeles Co. and Orange CO.) and Texas. I have never seen anyone who was a legal gun owner commit a crime with their gun. When I first moved to Texas, W. had just been elected Governor and one of the first things he did was pass the CCW laws. At first I was worried that there was going to be a bunch of nuts running around and that there was going to be hell to pay the first time two CCW holders shoot each other over a parking space (HAS NOT HAPPENED). What I have seen is over 10 incidents in the past 8 years where police officer's lives have been saved by CCW holders who have come to their aid when back up was too far away. That doesn't sound like a lot, but tell that to the 10 sets of wives, children, parents, Etc. who's LEO loved one came home to them. Honestly, I don't really know that the CCW laws have actually prevented criminals from deciding not to commit a crime (one of the original arguments in Texas was that it would) but it has reduced the amount of criminals getting away with the crimes (whether they are dead or bleeding or just laying spread eagle on the ground when the police show up after the crime is complete are all fine out comes with me).

The flip side to criminals being bad shots though is that they rarely hit their intended victims and all too often it is some innocent by stander who takes the bullet, so I've thought about this for a couple of years and I think the best solution to that problem is mandatory CCW's. We take everyone over the age of 21 who has a clean criminal record and arm them. We teach them all how to shoot, we even use tax dollars to fund it. Now we already know that it won't prevent bad guys from committing crimes, but it will make the punishment a sure thing if not immediate. Eventually, there won't be any bad guys left.

Just read yer homepage and had a hoot!

You Texans ought to immediately apply to become Kiwis: we'd welcome you with open arms, as Brothers. We need a colony overseas, and I can't think of a better one than Texas!

(Kidding, mate: but only just. We just have to get used to the fact that yer now part of the USA and we missed out: "snooze you lose" or so they say.)

Tho' we have the population of, say, metropolitan Chicago, us Kiwis punch way above our weight. Y'all would fit in just fine with us rugby-loving Galoots. Most of us can shoot straight despite our Government's preference for us to be unarmed. And we have wide-open-spaces -- but not quite on a Texas Scale -- and we appreciate our neighbors at a distance.

God Bless the Lone Star State. And God Defend New Zealand.

And God Bless America.

Cheers from DownUnder (NZ)

Eureka Springs is about 3 1/2 miles from my house. It's a little bedroom community on the east side of Fort Bragg that was build up in the late 40s, early 50s.

Newer subdivisions are going in just to the east of it.

Eureka Springs is characterized by older, smaller frame homes, a few duplex units, single wides and some double wides. Most residents are lower ranking military, some retired military and low income families. Typical unit is a rental.

Not really a "bad" area. Just the typical break in stuff most neighborhoods have if they don't have "Neighborhood Watch"

"Maybe he got mixed up and thought it was his house and he'd forgotten his key."

He couldn't identify his house during the day?

You know, I lived in Fayetteville for the first 22 years of my life, and my Dad still works at the Kelly plant, but I never heard of Eureka Springs until this article. Boy do I feel dumb...

If you are cutting over to Fort Bragg from Kelly Springfield you would go on Andrews Road, hit a T intersection at Eureka Springs and make a 2 block left/right jog through Eureka Springs and on to Honeycutt Rd then into Fort Bragg.

In the 70s the area was "out in the woods" but new subdivision are starting to fill in up to the edges. Also the new I-295 by-pass is going to take a big chunk of the southern edge.

With Fort Bragg covering 2 sides, the new subdivisions the east side and the highway the south side Eureka Springs is just about boxed off.

She actually killed the intruder. You gotta love that.
My GF wants a pistol for the house now. I suggested that a shotgun is a much better form of house protection. Just the sound of the shell being cocked scares the bejesus out of ya.

I love when they ask why the Policeman didn't just shot the criminal in the hand or in the shoulder like they see on Magnum PI or on 1 Adam 12.
