WASHINGTON Amid rumors that he may not run for re-election, Rep. Sherwood Boehlert is expected to make his intentions known soon.
Boehlert, R-24 of New Hartford, should make an announcement within sev-en to 10 days, his press officer, Sam Marchio, said Monday, acknowledging the rumors about the 12-term congressman.
Boehlert, 69, was driving from Utica to Canandaigua this morning to attend to-days town hall meeting with President Bush and then hell then be joining Bush on Air Force One.
Marchio had no further comment.
Former Seneca Falls Mayor Brad Jones, a Republican, has already announced hes running for the seat. Jones chairs the Seneca County Industrial Development Agency.
On Monday, Oneida County District Attorney Michael Arcuri, a Democrat, an-nounced hes also seeking the seat. In a press release, Arcuri, 46, said hes running because the country needs a change in leadership.
Citing the Iraqi War and other Bush policies, Arcuri said hes been particularly troubled by what he sees as the misplaced priorities, the mismanagement, and the misunderstandings of the needs of the American people.
In 2002, Boehlert, a moderate Republican, faced a strong Conservative primary bid from former Cayuga County Legislator Dr. David Walrath and eventually defeated him in the November election.
Boehlert chairs the Science Committee, which has jurisdiction over all federal nonmilitary scientific and technology research and development program, including NASA and the National Science Foundation.
Hes also the senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, serving as chairman of the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee.
The 24th district includes either all or parts of Seneca, Ontario, Cayuga, Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Oneida, Otsego, Tioga and Tompkins counties.
