If you read the New York Sun or the New York Post, you might be under the impression that WLIB, Air America Radio's New York City affiliate, is going under.
Last night, I attended a fundraiser for Al Franken's new political action committee, the Midwest Values Pac (MVP). The goal of MVP is to raise money for progressive candidates in Franken's home state of Minnesota as well as progressive candidates in other states, including Vermont's Bernie Sanders (for more on MVP, check out this BuzzFlash interview).
Franken gave a hilarious speech, but took a serious tone when he discussed the values that define MVP-- universal health care, a living wage, equitable funding for public schools, a just trade policy that protects the interests of working people, and multilateral cooperation, to name a few.
Anyway, towards the end of the night, I asked Al about the rumors regarding Air America. "Look," he told me, "Bill O'Reilly alone has said that Air America was on the verge of collapse thirty-six times. We're not going anywhere."
Franken is an expert in the art of self delusion.
"We're not going anywhere."
You can say that again, Al.
"When pigs fly" bump.
Uncle George give smelly Smalley his fix?
They are sounding better than ever here in the Phoenix area. They are GONE. Not to be found. Not alive, DEAD!
Those aren't his own words, you know. He's just parroting Air America's press release from a few days ago where they said the same thing.
I doubt that he knows anything about the negotiations presently going on. Why would he?
D
Maybe it's not going under but it is not "ok."
As long as they keep getting skimmed funding from the Boys and Girls Clubs they should be fine on finances for a while.
That's interesting. I didn't know they ever were here in the Phoenix area.
I've been saying this for years and no even Newt Gingrich started talking about the same thing recently.
Imagine if this was law? That only a legally registered voter could donate money or anything else of value to a candidate. No more lobbyists, no more HillPac (Hillary Clinton) manipulating elections and people in Congress with money. People like John McCain or John Kerry would no longer jet around the country sticking their noses in the affairs of people they do not represent. And, since the voters would have control (as the founders intended) because they would be the source of money for the candidates people in office and running for office would be "home" all the time. And more people would register to vote because they would have the power over THEIR representatives that the founders intended.
Al Franken nor anyone else should be able to attempt to manipulate any election they cannot personally vote in.
oh...it must be true then- just like Franken, whose signature was on the check from the Boys and Girls Club, said he knew nothing about the money from the Boys and Girls Club...
I love all these "progressive causes" - universal health care, a living wage, equitable funding for public schools, a just trade policy that protects the interests of working people, and multilateral cooperation.
How does he define a "living wage?" Does he think a janitor should make $150K a year? Does he understand living and minimum wages cause unemployment? Does he know most "poor" people in the US have AC, a car, cable TV and a roof over their head? And their kids are obese, not "starving."
And how the heck do you have protectionist trade policies while building "multilateral cooperation?"
I think it was Tom Delay who had the greatest quote that was something like, "If the liberals got all their causes approved, the US would be in economic, political and military chaos." Sounds the Jimmy Carter years - 1977-1981.
Good luck, Al.
I dunno. I donate to Ron Paul and I don't live in Texas.
And how many times did he tell America that he knew nothing about the funds Air America took from poor kids in New York?
. . .Between the hours of 10 A.M. and 3 P.M., the period that includes Al Franken's program, Air America drew a 1.4-percent share of the New York audience aged 25 to 54 in Winter 2005. That number is the latest in a nearly year-long decline. In Spring of 2004, Air America's first quarter on the air, it drew a 2.2-percent share of the audience. That rose to 2.3 percent in the Summer of 2004, then fell to 1.6 percent in the Fall of 2004, and is now 1.4 percent Air America's lowest-ever quarterly rating in that time and demographic slot.
The ratings also show WABC radio, which airs Rush Limbaugh, consistently beating Air America in New York City even though Franken had at one time claimed to be beating the conservative host there. In the 10 a.m. to 3 P.M. period in the Winter of 2005, WABC (and Limbaugh) won 2.7 percent of the audience to Air America's 1.4 percent. In Spring 2004, WABC beat Air America 2.7 percent to 2.2 percent. In Summer 2004, WABC won 2.7 percent to 2.3 percent. In Fall 2004, WABC won 3.6 percent to 1.6 percent.
That last number surprised some observers because it showed Air America faltering in October and November 2004, the period when the presidential election was reaching its finish and political passions were presumably at their highest. But even then, Air America's decline continued. And now, it has fallen even farther.
The only good reason to listen to Air Amerika is so you will know their sponsors and avoid buying those products.
Socialism is a "mid-west" value?
The mid-west rejected that a long time ago.
[How does he define a "living wage?" Does he think a janitor should make $150K a year? Does he understand living and minimum wages cause unemployment? Does he know most "poor" people in the US have AC, a car, cable TV and a roof over their head? And their kids are obese, not "starving."]
Next time someone starts to argue this point, ask them what a fair "living wage" is for a 16 year old kid working part time while in High School? Ask them then, what the fair wage is for the part time or full time college student. Finally, ask them what the fair wage is for the retired person keeping busy for exercise and fun.
When they answer all these questions, ask them what a fair wage is for what they do and what it should be when we raise the fair wage for all the other people they mentioned. Ask them if Bill Gates makes a fair wage and if we should also consider his salary in the discussion.
Al - can you explain these numbers?
Or were you too busy hanging out at the Girls and Boys Club?
Note - liberals hanging out at Girls and Boys Clubs is NOT a good idea.
