I guess I should know this, but have we officially declared war on Iraq and Afghanistan?

These soldiers are your fellow countrymen, your family, friends, and neighbors. They are us.

Except that without us, they can exist.

Not so the other way round.

No, it's not required because it is not a war that requires it.

You might find one or two threads on FR about this...

An email I got in the Summer of 2004.

Dear 2banana,

I would just like to thank you for making me smile! I am sincerely overjoyed that you have proved me correct! You took the time to degrade my friend and I (two teenage girls who wished only to be allowed to think and act as individuals and become part of something truly productive), rip apart my feelings and insult me publicly. I needed proof that you conservative military guys are all the same- pig-headed, ignorant, rude, intellectual midgets (no offense to midgets of course). If you would like to murder millions of people, go ahead, but you know what? Do NOT do it in the name of the American people because my family, friends and I are American and do not feel the need to harm those who have not harmed us (ooh, but perhaps they're trying to take away the oil that allows we "proud Americans" to drive our SUVs that destroy "proud America's" air...then, I'm sure it would be fine to blow up children and rape women and humiliate soldiers)

Sincerely,

xxxxxxxxx

P.S. I was correct, no? Mr. Bush has turned out to be a true liar. I suppose I would want to run away if, in fact, my mom or dad was proved to be a liar. And as for my teachers? I am frightened of those who believe I should fall in line and take away the basic human rights of others, as I am frightened of President Bush. I defend those who are wrongly accused, I do not support thieves, morons or liars. Oh! And remember to vote Kerry for President!

As soon as I pressed the post button, I knew the answer. We're not at war with the entire country, just some bad apples who happen to live there.

We can do our part. If we see a soldier in uniform, anywhere, be sure to say a quick thank you.

They need to know that we are here supporting them.

Yup. we are going after terrorists. Even in the USA. It woulnd't make sense to make a formal declaration of war on ourselves. We'll leave that to the liberals...

We need to reinstate the draft, that way, more people will have the experience.

There isn't a veteran alive that doesn't support our service people. However, that is also true of the rest of loyal Americans. The trashing comes from the radical left wing Commies who no longer have a home in the old USSR and are trying to make the USA fit their mold.

The few realistic films such as Hamburger Hill and The Hanoi Hilton, were panned. Those that trashed the troops, such as Platoon, Coming Home Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, and the entire Rambo series, were gushed over for their “gritty realism.” Never mind that the thesis was flawed, these films, we were assured, “told it like it was.” Baloney.

Apocalypse Now and the Rambo series – I thought they were tongue in cheek comedy until a wannabe hippie set me straight.

I take issue with his comments about the Vietnam flicks. Movies are an art form and I've pretty much liked all of them in one way or another, starting with "Go tell the Spartans." "Apocalypse Now" is a great movie to help any Vietnam vet bring back memories of their own service. Although I was not an Infantryman, "Platoon's" night firefight and "Forrest Gump's" ambush depict the fear and chaos of what must take place. "Deer hunter" is a metaphor, and it has value to me. I served two tours in Nam and don't know anything about the Rambo series.
