A large tornado has moved through Illinois and has just hit the City of Springfield. Spotters reported a large tornado moved through the city. Damage is being reported. Emergency responders are being called in from surrounding areas.
NWS reports that this was a large wedge tornado.
What is a "wedge" tornado?
What is a wedge tornado?
A wedge tornado is a tornado that is large...sometimes 1/2 miles wide or larger.
60 miles south of me.

A tornado that appears to be wider than it is tall. i.e. a big, nasty tornado.
Yikes
There's no official definition, but to chasers I think they've generally defined one as one that's wider than it is tall.

Just talked to my Dad who lives just west of 55 by Lake Springfield and the powerplant, he is in their closet right now with no power.
Sorry - EAST of 55 (not west)
My prayers for your Dad, that all will be well. Scarey stuff, I've been thru one and no thanks, don't want to do it again.
