An analysis of its effect begins 2 years after adoption.
More than two years after guaranteeing employees of Broward County government and its contractors would be paid almost $5 above the minimum wage, county officials have no idea how much the higher pay has cost taxpayers, how many people have benefited or whether companies complied with the requirement.
Although the total cost of the living-wage ordinance is not known, it has run into the millions on one contract alone. County commissioners approved a janitorial contract last week that will cost an extra $3.1 million a year because of the law. The contract boosts the pay of almost 200 janitors at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport from $6.75 an hour to the current living-wage rate of $11.48 set in county ordinance.

Commissioners decided they were obligated not only to cover the pay increases for janitors but also bump up the salaries of their supervisors and the office manager, even though the living-wage ordinance has no proviso to do so. Without that step, the janitors would have been making as much as or more than their bosses.
"This was a huge, huge ticket item," Commissioner John Rodstrom said of the ordinance, which he opposed. "Are we spending $20 million a year, $30 million a year? No one knows."

No one knows? Are you saying they just wrote a blank check knowing they'd push the burdons of their idiocy upon the hard working taxpayers of Broward County? I believe that you are...
Wow. I guess I didn't hear as much a scream about this from next door because it's relegated to "gubmint" employees in Broward. They've basically taken every applicable contractor/custodial/supervisor/office manager job and increase it from $6.75 to $11.48. They went beyond "living wage" and increased EVERYONE's Pay.
And they don't even know the impact yet!
To me it's a scandle beyond measure. Who in their right mind would permit such wreckless behavior to reign over county finances?!? Are they going to blame President Bush as their coffers bleed dry? OK, that's a given...

When the taxpayer/homeowner opens their mortgage payment and notices their monthly payment has jumped $200 dollars to pay for county taxes. I suspect they'll "ask a few questions".
My beeber is stunned, folks. Feel free to pick up a stick and poke any liberal idiot from Broward with it.
My sympathy to my fellow FReepers next door.
Have at it.
In SoFla I believe they push the
of their idiocy.

Broward County: A textbook case of NY tourists conquering the locals.
Well, let's see. The county needs more money to fund the blank check, so they raise property taxes. Every business in the county passes the higher taxes onto the consumer, and every homeowner has to write a bigger monthly check to their mortgage company. Some people will cross county lines to do business where prices are lower, meaning that some businesses will close. Now some people are out of work, and they may have to leave the county and go elsewhere to find it (reducing the county's tax base), or if they're lucky, they'll try to get a job working on a county project. So, prices are higher, taxes are higher, some jobs are gone . . . and all of a sudden, that living wage isn't a living wage any longer. Maybe they should raise the limit....
"There aren't any ordinances that we just blindly pass and never go back to see how they are working, but the living-wage ordinance has been treated differently and I found it very surprising when I started to learn that," said Commissioner Kristin Jacobs, who authored the ordinance.
A Gubmit program not measured for its impact?
Say it isn't so.
I would say this girl is probably surprised, oh, like, 95 times a day.
I've got to get into politics.
Ask a few questions? That's rich.
Like ... What tee time did you get for us? Or ... Who simonizes your Mercedes?
Exactly why, do you think, those bozo's running Broward County get away with this garbage?
11.50 an HOUR for a JANITOR????????????????
your friend can go here to get a 'living wage'
You got that right, why else would it have Debbie WHINE-amakker as their representative in the House? And before HER it was NY city lawyer boy Peter Deutsch-bag.
Liberals have long been known for not caring about whether something works or not. To them it's the thought that counts because that lets them fell all warm and fuzzy.
I would refuse to comply; then sue the county. Let the market decide.
