Another post-mortem.

The port deal debacle has also proven that Dubai possesses a broader mind than the US when it comes to welcoming and promoting investments and that its openness is genuine and not decided by race or creed.
Uh, then Israel is welcome in Dubai?

I just don't understand why they would be so upset?
I thought our allies enjoyed being tarred and feathered as head chopping Muslim maniacs coming to kill our children?!
Plus, everyone knows they not only look alike but they all act alike too .....

How much do you think a full page ad or half page ad in the Gulf weekly would cost. I am thinking of organizing a half page or full page ad apologizing for our Congress's conduct and having as many names of americans I can get on it

And a liberal one, at that.

No just a good ole fashion Southern conservative that is man enough to say we were wrong. We have business interest and military folks over there. Call it liberal if you like, but if I can help out some serviceman on leave there or some poor American business guy that are asked by UAE folks why we view them as something like Libya then I thats not much to ask in my book.

"The country is run by a monarchy." True. But it is also true that in this case they showed grace and understanding while our county slipped into a shameful display of bigotry. We are not responsible for the UAE being a monarchy, we are responsible for our actions.
Bigotry is stupid, and it will cost our country massive amounts of lives and money in the end. We have given our enemies a sword, and they will use it against us.

Call it liberal if you like, but if I can help out some serviceman
Cindy Sheehan thinks she's helping servicemen, too.

Its the truth. The UAE was very graceful in how they withdrew not to cause our relationship or our President any more trouble. It shamed the US Congress. Think about that a Monarchy shamed the US Congress in class, policy and common sense.
To: Lazamataz
Whatever dude. At least I am concerned about the stability of our bases there. I doubt Mrs Sheehan gives a big flip about the importance of strong military and commercial relationship with the UAE. I am sure at Camp Casey Mrs Sheehan is worried about intelligence sharing between the UAE and our intelligence agencies. It would seem that her lack or worry though is shared by many here. Congrats

All manner of criticism is due us. This was not our finest moment. Incipient stupidity by the American electorate was catapaulted by Democrat demogoguery and certain Republican cowards. The only winner in the US was George Bush. He will not get any credit.
This was a perfect winner for the Democrats. By opposing the Dubai port deal they could appeal to base American xenophobia, thereby parading their understanding of patriotism, and create an international maelstrom for Bush.
It is likely that time elapsed between now and elections will create a clearer view. This, coupled with the inevitable fallout from giving a raw deal to an important ally, should produce a few more Republican seats in each branch of Congress.
Once again the Democrats have accepted long-term loss for short-term gain.

Let me know if I can sign the apology. You have been reasonable throughout this whole ordeal, and it's been appreciated. Don't let anyone dog you.

Precisely.
Dear Emir: Please get back with us when Israel is welcome to operate your ports.
Sincerely,

I will. maybe the author of this thread can get some prices since he lives there. I am not real big on apologies to other countries. But since some Congressmen have taken on the role of Secretary of State and found some extra Constitutional role toward foreign policy and ports I wasnt aware of ,I am not so timid.

Lately, I'm thinking we need to have a day -- or maybe a week, or a month -- in which "The Question" (found on my FR homepage) is included in each "un[_____]" Freeper's tagline.
I'm not one for "loyalty oaths", but lately, I've been seeing an awful lot of what seems to be stunningly reminiscent of Astroturf. No inferences to "your poster" implied, just commenting on the issues raised in your counter to him.

nationalist sentiments that seem to be inexorably on the rise...Dubai possesses a broader mind than the US ...it too can cancel deals.... the flap over the ports ... unwarranted hostility ... US assets less attractive...
Blah blah blah.
