Restless Republicans are already looking beyond the embattled presidency ... to the 2008 campaign.
...
The delegates were voting in an informal "straw poll" to test the popularity of White House hopefuls including those in attendance -- Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, Sen. George Allen of Virginia, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee.
...
Despite controlling the White House and Congress for most of the past five years, many Republicans feel both have fallen short on a number of issues including tax reform, fiscal responsibility, immigration, Social Security and family values.
"A big problem with our base is our spending," said Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, ... "My time at this convention will be spent talking about a Republican Party ...-- a party of controlling the size of government and reforming the government."
"If we don't have a program that reforms taxes and controls spending different from the Democrats, a lot of people will sit out the next election as Republicans," he warned. "We're dangerously close ... to having a deflated base."
Brownback, a favorite of social conservatives, said runaway spending is a problem for Republicans but so is a failure to produce innovative plans on health care, energy, the environment and rebuilding the American family.
...
The restlessness is also fueled by polls. An AP-Ipsos survey shows that just 37 percent of people approve of Bush's performance and a mere 31 percent give the Republican-led Congress high marks.
Underscoring Graham's point about a deflated base, Bush's job approval among Republicans has dropped 8 percentage points to 74 percent since February, the poll showed. More than half of Republicans disapprove of Congress' performance.

My Congressman got an earfull from his constituaents last week--maybe he'll quit being a party line hack and think for himself.
It may be just me but the ultimate blueprint for someone to lead this country is the Reagan Blueprint; Tough on national defense, legitimate fiscal responsibility (low taxes, limited government), a committment to what you believe in and the "stones" to step and sell the value of your beliefs to the American people.
It works EVERY TIME it is tried.
"It may be just me but the ultimate blueprint for someone to lead this country is the Reagan Blueprint;"
and his name is Mike Pence.
I would support Ron Paul.
Mike Pence
Yep, I'm sold. Pence sounds fantastic, and given my one vote, that's where it would fall.
I was surprised to not see George Allen in this list. Seems like he is at the top of every other list I've seen.
Mike Pence.
Haley Barbour.
On the George Allen number, I'm apparently blind ;)
I'm gonna vote Libertarian next time. Please don't tell me I'm wasting my vote. I know that. I have had it with the GOP. They won't even protect our borders. The US Army in pacifying Iraq, whose gonna help the people down on the border who are being overrun by illegals?
Whose gonna pay for all the free education and medical care the illegals are getting? Why isn't this being talked about?
"It may be just me but the ultimate blueprint for someone to lead this country is the Reagan Blueprint;"
Exactly...........Mike Pence

I read that site too, I think he is great! I know House members don't typically get elected, but he is what this country needs, and I think conservatives would rally to his support. I really do.
Most intersting to me is who will be the next Karl Rove? Whoever that may be, they are working feverishly as we speak.
Regarding my choices in '08, as stated before, Governor Mike Sanford of SC and Mike Pence of IN would be my ideal ticket. I was also recently impressed with the Governor of South Dakota, whose name escapes me at the moment.
Last, if there is a major terrorist event here is the USA between now and 2008, it will pave the way for a candidate coming directly from the military, such as Tommy Franks or someone of that stature. Which I would LOVE to see. We could use a military mind and discipline at the helm in these troubled times.
1. Strong on defense and taking the war to the terrorists wherever they are hiding.
2. Strong on cutting spending...not talking about it...but introducing legislation to cut it and pushing that legislation.
3. Strong on limiting government to those Constitutionally-mandated functions and willing to explain to the American people that it is not the Federal government's job to solve every problem in their day-to-day lives.
Who is that person?
70+ million voters and growing will not be sitting out the election in '08. Once the Democratic Crime Syndicate is voted into extinction, the question is will you be able to govern, or will you be headed down the same road?
You can rule out Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. He's tall, dark, and handsome so that might be exciting for some, but his qualifications are only skin-deep.
Thanks for the heads up. Whoever did that website, did a heck of a job.
