SACRAMENTO — It looks like state Sen. Chuck Poochigian can save some money this spring in his run for state attorney general. His opponent in June's Republican primary, former U.S. ambassador-at-large Pierre Prosper, announced Thursday he was dropping out of the race.

Prosper, who advised the Bush administration on war crimes issues until last year, said in a statement that his campaign did not meet fundraising goals and "we realized that the Republican primary would be an uphill battle." Prosper's campaign reported having $53,871 cash on hand as of Dec. 31, the latest reporting period. The Poochigian campaign reported having more than $2.6 million.

As of late Thursday, no other Republican candidate had filed to run in the primary, according to the California secretary of state's Web site. The deadline to file is today.

"Now the focus of my attention can be on November," said Poochigian, whose state Senate district includes eastern Fresno County

Whom is the Democrat Establishment behind in the AG race ? I would think Rocky Delgadillo would be a their choice as the last time Jerry Brown ran statewide (in a good 'Rat year in 1982), he lost the open Senate race to Pete Wilson. Brown, for a time, even left the 'Rat party in the '90s. Brown looks to be attempting to follow in his father's footsteps (who won the AG office before advancing to Governor), and I have no doubt if he wins, he wants to return to the Governorship in 2010 (presuming Ah-nold isn't beaten by Pestly or Angelides).

Also, I wonder how many will register a protest vote with William Chambers in the GOP Gubernatorial primary ? I sure as hell would.

I looked at Rocky's donor list. Less than 6% of his contributors are from Northern California. He definitely has the LA Power brokers behind him (including lots of Arnold's top donors). Found on the list were Dick Riordan, his wife, and business partners (e.g. Lewis, McKinzie, Levine, Leichtman); Magic Johnson; Rob Lowe and his wife; Jerrold Perenchio and wife; Eli Broad; Rob Reiner; Gary Winnick; Lodwrick Cook; Bram Goldsmith; Steve Soboroff (and family); Paul Wachter (Arnold's business manager); Stewart Resnick and wife; Steven Tisch; Wallis Annenberg; lots of Pritzkers; Richard Sandler; George Clooney; Warren Christopher; Henry Cisneros....

Ah yes, the RINO's RINO. And some people actually wanted this psycho as the Republican nominee for governor.

I haven't seen any polls. In the meantime, I did look at Jerry Brown's contributors. He has Dianne Feinstein and her husband, Richard Blum, on his side. Also, the Tsakopoulos family (big Angelides supporters), Sherry Lansing, Steven Spielberg, Larry Ellison, GAP Chief Donald Fisher and wife (also big Arnie supporters), and several of the Unions. Brown has raised about $3.5 million to Delgadillos $2 million. 70% of Brown's donations are coming from Northern California (vs. Rocky's 6%) and 24% from Southern California (vs. Rocky's 84%).

This looks like a North vs. South fight.

"This looks like a North vs. South fight."

That sounds somewhat similar to the Senate race battle in '92 for the open Cranston seat. However, in that case, you had 2 Northerners (Boxer, and Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy) vs. 1 Southerner (L.A. Rep. Mel Levine). By all accounts, Levine should've been able to exploit the regional situation, but as the most "Conservative" (albeit still very liberal), he placed a paltry 3rd. The carryover to the general reflected Southern CA not wanting two Bay Area Northerners representing it in the Senate (Bruce Herschensohn carried Southern CA in the general, as did incumbent Sen. John Seymour from Anaheim against Feinstein).

It was interesting to read in Barone's '94 Almanac that he criticized Wilson for not appointing a little-known Stanford Professor named Condi Rice. ;-)

lol. I'm confused by your statement. Who was doing the criticizing?

Michael Barone was doing the criticizing (as mildly as he could without it appearing to be outright advocacy). Of course, had Rice been appointed to the seat and beaten DiFi, it's highly unlikely that Dubya would've removed her from a Senate seat that would go 'Rat (as Davis was the Governor when Dubya became President) to appoint her to the position she held during the first term, Nat'l Security Advisor. Personally, I think Rice looks VERY Presidential (probably the single most qualified female in U.S. history), but we don't know how she'd perform in a political race.
