FBI warns of terror threat at sporting events
ABC ^

(3/10/06) - With college basketball championships underway around the country, the FBI has warned stadium operators of a possible suicide bomb attack at sporting events.

In a directive issued today, obtained by ABC News, the FBI says a posting on an extremist message board "advocated suicide attacks against sporting events as a cost-effective means of killing thousands of Americans."

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security say they cannot confirm the credibility of the threat or whether the message is affiliated with al Qaeda.

The FBI says the Internet posting said the suicide attacks would be justified because the United States refused a truce offered by Osama bin Laden in his last videotaped statement, Jan. 19, 2006.

Posting Suggests Using American Suicide Bombers

According to the FBI bulletin, the author of the posting recommended using "three to five blond or black American Muslim suicide bombers." The FBI says the author suggested homemade explosives be hidden under their winter clothing.

The posting recommended, according to the FBI, that one suicide bomber detonate inside the stadium and the others detonate at exit gates as spectators were fleeing.

"The combined explosions would create a panic that would kill far more spectators than the bombing alone," the FBI quotes the message as saying.

The FBI says it is unaware of any specific or credible plans to attack any sporting event but notes that terrorist groups have mounted attacks against sporting events in the past.

The FBI recommends that sports leagues and stadium operators review and coordinate security practices and emergency response procedures "to address this potential threat."

Statistically improbable phrases, heh. Yeah, I love that Amazon function. I wonder if "data mining" and "able danger" were statistically improbably, ten years ago?

"As Islam spreads ..."

if "Islam" is a peaceful religion, then this would be quelled. But, it is not a religion, it is a culture, complete with rules that include kissing a rug 5 times a day and treating women like dogs. It is at odds with western culture, and the day is coming when the battle will be joined at all levels, as opposed to the way it is now. Only one culture will survive. Do we have the will or have we been feminized into committing suicide? I wonder.

I'll leave that to others. I don't do mass crowd scenes, but it could be interesting if it gets beyond comparisons to ocean waves or cattle stampedes.

This ain't Hollywood. The spectators will not run shrieking in horror. They will surely stomp any bombers that haven't exploded yet.

Dude, does the Cincinnati Who concert ring a bell?  Eleven people died running to their seats.

Imagine those bozos if they had been clever enough to fire into a packed stadium.

Festival seating - it was a rush to get to the good seats. They were happy and excited. What do you think it's going to look like when 25,000 terrified people - all in their seats - start running for their lives toward the exits?

This has already happened, but the FBI refused to call it what it was.

They won't all be terrified. Some will be. It's a different world than when nobody used to think of attacks during a game.

I hope you're right. Actually, I hope we never find out.

It may be a matter of size/scale, too. One bomber in a corridor on the other side of the arena might be one thing, but multiple explosions or one large one is going to cause panic and then everyone's looking for a door, not their superhero cape.

I, too, hope they don't try this. But, these days when there is a public event a lot of people are thinking about this. At least identify the exits first when you go in. Get oriented and find alternative routes. Then find your seat.

Yes, let's whip up the fervor a bit more. I mean it's not like the average citizen hasn't completely turned against everything Arabic no matter if it's harmless or not (i.e. DPW)

Them A-rabs are going to get into a NASCAR event!! Would somebody stop and think for a moment? What would happen if a terrorist team tried attacking a NASCAR event? Do you really think they would get that far? I would really like to meet the guy that comes up with these supposed threats. Just to punch him right in the face.

That being beside the point though. Most anything that comes from the FBI and the Department of Homeland 'Security' should be dismissed out of hand as information from incompetent bureaucrats. Hear anything of late about the coloring book 'threat' warning system? No? Because it wasn't frightening enough. Better to scare up concern on a semi-regular basis of how much we need the federal government to secure anything and everything. To remind us poor fools how much we actually need those 537+ hacks in Washington DC and how much better it would be if all power was centralized there

Didn't say it couldn't happen. But the nonsense passed on these days as 'threats' is nothing more than rhetoric from a government trying to justify its intrusive actions
