Contra-Minuteman group in opposition is planning to monitor the monitors
About 700 Minuteman volunteers patrolling South Texas this April will be one of the more visible results of what Michael Vickers hopes to accomplish as Texas state director of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.
Vickers, a veterinarian and ranch owner in Falfurrias, was appointed state director Thursday and said he'll appoint regional directors to organize the minuteman corps around Texas.
His goal is to have a rotating force of volunteers monitoring 600,000 acres across South Texas for undocumented immigrants for a week or more at a time. Between 40 and 50 volunteers are monitoring a smaller stretch of ranchlands this month, he said, part of a series of mini-deployments of volunteers between the major patrols in October and April, when more immigrants are believed to travel through their land.
"Those are traditionally really active months," Vickers said, "but in the past few years, with the flood like it is, it's really active every day of every month."
The minutemen's deployments haven't been overlooked by the Contra-Minutemen Coalition, said Mike Chavez, that group's organizer for South Texas. The coalition will mobilize when the minutemen do, he said, to monitor the group for human rights violations.
"We'll be watching them to the extent possible from adjoining ranches and to keep them from going on ranches that do not want them," Chavez said.
The minuteman group reported helping Border Patrol officials apprehend more than 1,500 undocumented immigrants since it started patrolling the region Oct. 1, he said. Local law enforcement agencies and Border Patrol officers are overwhelmed by the flow of undocumented immigrants and don't have the resources to assist frustrated ranchers who report immigrants traveling across their property, Vickers said.
The group's spring patrol begins April 1 but couldn't be further from an April Fools' prank.
"The joke will be on the coyotes and the slave traders that are running this thing," Vickers said.
