PROTECTIONISTS, REJOICE! The dastardly United Arab Emirates company that would have presumed to unload containers of underwear and toothpaste on U.S. soil has backed down, and it will now divest its U.S. port interests to an American entity. Rest assured, the nation is now safe from dangerous Middle Eastern accountants and port logistics specialists.
Dubai Ports World did what was necessary, if not necessarily fair, on Thursday by agreeing to give up the U.S. operations of its newly acquired British ports company. The House Appropriations Committee had voted 62 to 2 on Wednesday to block the deal; a similar bill was pending in the Senate.
Although President Bush rightly stood by the acquisition and vowed to veto any bill that stood in its way, he was fighting a losing battle that only deepened a growing rift in the Republican Party. Dubai Ports World officials wisely recognized that they had to put some distance between themselves and their new U.S. assets. The company probably will sell its U.S. assets or create a U.S. company with a separate board to run them.
Much as we wish it would go away, the fight may not be over yet.
For one, the terms of the divestiture remain unclear, and some members of Congress are demanding more details. Will it be enough for Dubai Ports World to create a U.S. subsidiary? Will it have to open headquarters in the United States? Pay its employees in dollars?

RE: "Your opinion about how it has been handled is also based on FEELING."
OK, I will admit that, being an old fart, I do rely on something we in business call a "gut check" from time to time. They don't teach that in MBA school. So, when I put myself in the shoes of the people who are supposed to look at things like this, including, I must concede here to cynical current reality, political downsides, I see that some opportunities were missed. Due dilegence involves more than nuts and bolts. Rookie mistake by someone involved.
But when I found out the facts involved, and that there would be no increased security risk (according to the U.S. Military) from this very reliable company doing business in other strong allied countries (such as Australia), I changed my mind.
Nothing has changed it back.
It would appear they are against all things Bush. Bushborg is more approbate.
In that part of the world, things change second by second.
Your avoideance of the word, "fear", to me, is just a word game.
Not trusting someone means you're afraid they'll do you wrong.
If you have evidence on which to base that fear, it would then be justified.
What specifically do you fear the deal would have caused?
So, since you yourself lack any real facts or analysis here, and appear to be angry about not getting your way on this issue, you have nothing more to do than to resort to smearing and ad hominem. I invite you to leave the GOP. I will not miss you.
What terrorists work for DPW? (Stick with facts please).
Which members of alQaeda or any other terrorist network are employed by DPW, and would have infiltrated our ports because DPW operates some of the terminals?
Has any terrorist been part of this company? Have any terrorist acts been done by employees of this company?
On what factual evidence do you base your statement?
I know you think me dimwitted, but humor me here, and give me the facts on which you base this feeling of yours?
If you were referring the the presidential, are you telling me that if the Pentagon was hesitant and did not want to have the Marines in Beirut, or the USS Cole in Yemen, their concerns over ridden by the Presidential Admin?
What were they saying during the three weeks of Bush-bashing misinformation?
Arabs and Muslims are nonbelievers and infidels to Christians. Have you not noted any such sentiment from some on the port threads. I have. If not just go listen to your local street preacher.
No. That is not a question.
How's the "big tent" doing these days as you turn on every single conservative in the U.S. who disputed you on the port deal.
So, if you were alone at night walking down the street and you had a feeling you were being followed, you wouldn't trust your feelings? Remember you have no evidence to base your facts on that anyone is stalking you, only that God given sixth sense someone is moving up behind you. You wouldn't trust that instinct?
I have given facts. You have given feelings (and I laughed at you for your '8th grade' smear of me.......I'm sorry, but it was both stupid and funny).
But I'll level with you. I expect more from my party than they have given me this past week. They politicked and demagogued, and I expect more than that from Republicans.
(btw, I am actively involved in my county to elect Ken Blackwell as our Governor.........just had a meeting this morning, in fact. I believe the GOP needs serious reformation.........and I would think that any conservative would agree on that. And might I add that GOP activists like me in Ohio, who put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears in November of 2004, saved this nation from jFkerry? I really don't think you want to 'get rid' of people like me, who think independently, and work hard for conservative causes).
The term 'Bushbot' is thrown out when the Bushborg poster has lost the argument on points. Bushborg ( aganist all things Bush).
Making things up like you just did deserves being ignored.
Bye, Paul. Write that book.
THOSE are the facts. That's what I deal in.
Unsubstantiated fears do not make for good decisions.
