PROTECTIONISTS, REJOICE! The dastardly United Arab Emirates company that would have presumed to unload containers of underwear and toothpaste on U.S. soil has backed down, and it will now divest its U.S. port interests to an American entity. Rest assured, the nation is now safe from dangerous Middle Eastern accountants and port logistics specialists.
Dubai Ports World did what was necessary, if not necessarily fair, on Thursday by agreeing to give up the U.S. operations of its newly acquired British ports company. The House Appropriations Committee had voted 62 to 2 on Wednesday to block the deal; a similar bill was pending in the Senate.
Although President Bush rightly stood by the acquisition and vowed to veto any bill that stood in its way, he was fighting a losing battle that only deepened a growing rift in the Republican Party. Dubai Ports World officials wisely recognized that they had to put some distance between themselves and their new U.S. assets. The company probably will sell its U.S. assets or create a U.S. company with a separate board to run them.
Much as we wish it would go away, the fight may not be over yet.
For one, the terms of the divestiture remain unclear, and some members of Congress are demanding more details. Will it be enough for Dubai Ports World to create a U.S. subsidiary? Will it have to open headquarters in the United States? Pay its employees in dollars?

The short and long of it is, I don't trust the UAE.
Bill OReily? I don't listen to that blowhard. All of you UAE supporters assume we who are against it are just dumb stupid lackeys without an iota of intelligence. Nearly everyone of you have used the mantra...It makes you look incompetent."
It's your virulent opposition to what we have to say against the deal that's makes me wonder if some of you are not on the uae PR payroll. To continue to push to change peoples minds after the deal is dead, is illogical, unless you have an agenda.
Correct, both Israel and the US fund a terrorist state. The US with your tax money.
I don't approve of supporting terrorists. Do you?
Note too that SSA's Long Beach operation is a JV, with contolling interest by COSCO, a Chinese-government owned operation.
In other words, it's not just political siphoning, it is blatantly unprincipled decisionmaking.
I am glad it was scrapped. It makes me very happy. I will now be able to enjoy my weekend without giving the matter any more thought.
No you are not a liberal (with a small L). But I suspect you may be headed for the Libertarian Party. In reality, I think that the loss of some folks from the GOP is a mixed bag. I somewhat look forward to less internicine warfare, but I worry that without the libertarians (with a small l) to keep us honest, we'll lose our fervor for any real reductions in social spending and taxes. I'm actually fairly well conflicted about it. Can't well all just get along? ..... :-)
Your second point, is once again based on your FEELING about 'how far' the UAE has come. People with far more factual information than you have (e.g. the U.S. military) have determined that there would have been no added threat to our national security.
Your opinion about how it has been handled is also based on FEELING. You may be right about your feeling, but it is a feeling nonetheless.
As I said previously, there is no logical rationale to oppose the deal. But as you aptly proved, plenty of emotion to base your opposition to it on.
No, they aren't. Get away from the dubai threads and get caught up on the news.
You said you weren't afraid of muslims in post 76.
But if you don't trust them, doesn't that by definition mean you're afraid of what they'll do?
So I ask, what specifically is it you're afraid could happen had this deal gone thru without the changes?
I've got your back on this. I've seen some pretty horrific posts on these threads.
Wow. It just happened yesterday and you have us in a 1929 depression. You're good. Wrong, but good. Lolol
All the logic was on his side, and he won the debate with everyone.........including you.
I guess you are proving the saying of "ignorance is bliss" true.
(Thanks for having my back. ;)
BTW, arabic is a semitic language. Technically, you could call the emphatic on both sides "anti-semitic."
Any "more" thought?
If you ever give the matter any real, no-kidding thought, it will be a first.
Oh, that L! Sorry for jumping to conclusions, before I had heard you out.
No, no way. I don't agree with their 'non-initiation of force', among many other things.
I'm a conservative -- which to me means I believe that govt should keep out of private enterprise.
I think the fallout from this will be serious. I do believe most 'thinking' conservatives will be disgusted by the R party's outright support of Schumer, Hilly, etc. It will be very, very difficult this November to make the argument that voting for an R is a vote to stop a D.
If that is your opinion.:)
