HOURS after boarding the luxury cruise that would result in her death, Dianne Brimble's friend warned her of a group of men who had been ogling female passengers, a Sydney inquest was told today. The next morning, Ms Brimble, 42, was found dead in a cabin belonging to some of those same men.
Police allege she had been given a lethal dose of the date rape drug gamma-hydroxybutyrate before being sexually assaulted.
The inquest was told Ms Brimble had been ecstatic, setting out on the "holiday of a lifetime" with family and friends on the P&O liner Pacific Sky on September 23, 2002.
That night, she met a group of eight men at a disco on the ship.
Close friend Nancy Chard today told Glebe Coroners Court she warned Ms Brimble not long after boarding the ship to stay away from the men.
"They were just basically watching every female so I just said to Di be very careful," Ms Chard said.
"They were odd, to my eyes they were really odd-looking people.
"There's a difference between just looking at a woman and undressing them by looking."
Ms Chard said she heard some of the men, who were staying in a cabin directly opposite hers, involved in an argument earlier that night with a group of girls.
She told the court the girls later informed her the men had asked them to expose their genitalia and had propositioned them.
The men were obviously drunk and had been making noise until the early hours of the morning, she said.
The day Ms Brimble's body was found, Ms Chard said she saw one of the eight men crying in the hallway, and in the following days, she said the men gave Ms Brimble's friends "filthy looks".
"They would give us a look as if to say, they have no shame," she said.
"It was almost like it was just playing, they had no remorse."
Ms Brimble's older sister Alma Wood, who also was on the cruise, tearfully told the court her sister had been a "prude" who would not have wilfully taken drugs or engaged in promiscuous sex.
"That sort of stuff was always gross to her," Ms Wood said.
The inquest before Deputy State Coroner Jacqueline Milledge continues next week.
Frankly speaking, I believe that there are lots of people who wish to have these sexual predators loose and among us. These peoples only goal is to sexually hurt other people, yet society at large continually lets them out into their hunting areas for further action. I dare you to tell me I wrong on this.
You're clearly quite ignorant, or are just trolling.
The cameras are already there, on almost all cruise ships. YOU CANNOT PROTECT ANYONE ANYWHERE, WHEN THE PREDATOR'S GOAL IS TO DO HARM TO ANOTHER! A camera is not a substitute for good sense.
I am not blaming the victim, but if you hang out in ANY place drinking with strangers, this can happen.
It is easy to be wary, anywhere. It is bad to get attacked, killed or raped, and it happens everywhere...
Lots of people? LOL. You realize the rate of sex crimes in this country has been going down for the last decade or so?

You're wrong on this.
No, it is you who is wrong and obviously deluded too. It is a well known fact that sexual predators are routinely released to commit these types of crimes over and over. If you dont know this, you need to come out from under your rock more often.
Women go on cruises to meet "men"....men go on cruises to meet women....cruise companies encourage the social side of the cruise...it all says sex....nothing new here, it is the same as college...
It isn't just Muslims - I've seen Russian and Eastern European immigrant men do the same thing all the time, in grocery stores and other public places. They have the courage but are inconsiderate - "boorish" is the only word for it. It's just a totally different culture - and the opposite extreme from the American white men who have become so scared by the predominant feminist culture that they are extremely considerate toward women but have no courage - they won't even dare make eye contact. They just come on FR and complain about how mean American women are to them. ;)

You're wrong about this.
You're either trolling or ignorant.
No, you are wrong. Sexual predators are released and have the highest recidivism rate of all violent crimes. Why else do you think they have to put these people up in hotels and move them around all the time? No community wants them. Do some research and become better informed, you sound very ignorant. We can clearly see with the church cases that the predators are out in society after a few short years if they do any jail time at all. That is but one recent example.
I agree about Alaska, but the CRUISE LINE which you choose also has a lot to do with the clientele. I prefer Celebrity and MSC. They are upscale, and so are most of the travelers. There are many more exclusive (translate EXPENSIVE) alternatives, as well, if it's riff-raff for which you are concerned. But I have seen drunks from all the spectrums, and they are still boorish and obnoxious.
I like re-positioning cruises for a great experience. You genereally get a longer cruise, at a fabulous price. In addition, since they leave from one port, and end in another, there are less people.
I was looking at an MSC cruise, for SEVENTEEN NIGHTS for $1195 (inside, pp plus air, taxes and fees). MSC Lirica leaves Ft. Lauderdale and ends in Genoa, in early May. Return Airfare is pretty cheap, too. since it ends in Italy, the trip is easily extended to visit sites there. I even have a guy just north of Rome who provides lodging and tours, along with visits to local ristorantes in his area.
As with many "well-known facts," this fact is wrong.
"...OMG, please, please, please don't let cruises go the way of air travel!..."
In 1999 I was flying from San Francisco to New York when the passenger assigned to the seat next to me arrived wearing shorts, a tanktop, and flip-flops. Ewwwww!
The flight attendants wisely bumped me to first-class because they could sense I was going to raise all sorts of holy hell. Why would they permit that ill-mannered person to even board the airplane? Basic rules should include no exposed armpits and firmly fastened shoes in case an evacuation is necessary.
The cruises I have taken have all been very nice and enjoyable. Let's hope they don't slide downmarket. That's when terrible things start to happen, like the story about this woman.

Another common myth. Sex offenders actually have a lower recidivism rate than other crimes.
so, I guess you have felt better if she had on a burka?
How did these flight attendants "sense" your ire? Not everyone is as sophisticated, nor pretend...
You posted: Now about liberal women, who really cares? Any lib female would go cheerfully with eight men to a sexual party, heck, thats liberalism to the core.
I would take from your post:
1. We do not need to care about sexual assault and murder against "liberal women"
2. Any liberal woman is a slut who would hop into an 8 man gang bang without a second thought
I read your post and I'm disgusted.
I know many liberal women, some of whom are in my immediate family. The way you describe them is inaccurate and would deservedly get you a kick in the nuts from many of them. What you posted is very small minded.
You dont want the truth, you cant take the truth.
_______________
LOL. Your lame attempt at a Jack Nicholson impersonation is too funny.
Does your dad know you are using his freeper handle today?
First of all, it was a man in his late-30's to early-40's who was dressed in the shorts, tanktop, and flip-flops. The flight attendants obviously determined there was a vast difference in our sense of sophistication. To eliminate any difficulties, they wisely moved me to the front of the plane. That was intelligent and proactive customer service on their part. They're a credit to their employer and I thanked them.
If you are a travel agent in the hospitality industry, why would you support "downgrades" in the way people comport themselves while traveling? There is no pleasure associated with traveling in an airplane with people wearing clothes that aren't even suitable for a backyard barbecue.

I don't support them, but I also can't teach people proper ettiquette. I give my folks a handout, which tells them how they should dress and answer other facts for them. But, I can't make them read it, nor follow the instructions.
I have traveled extensively, and have seen a lot of strange/amusing/scary. Have you ever traveled along with a real pig? You haven't "lived" until you have shared a train cabin with a two-legged on, and a four-legged one, and had no other choice but stay behind!
I just don't get upset because someone is not dressed to my standards. I would much rather sit next to him, than a drunk!
