"Police suspect terrorist infiltration; alert declared"
By YIGAL GRAYEFF AND JPOST.COM STAFF

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A terror alert was declared in the Lower Galilee on Sunday morning after intelligence sources revealed that a potential terrorist might have infiltrated into Israeli territory.

He was reported to have entered near Afula, and was suspected to be making his way to Beit Shean to execute an attack.

Situation rooms were established both in Afula and Beit Shean from where police and IDF forces were handling the alert.

They set up roadblocks in the region and were inspecting each passing car individually in order to locate the attacker. Heavy traffic jams resulted.

Police requested the drivers to be patient and to follow their instructions."

Police thwart suicide bombing in Israel
AP ^ | April 2, 2006

Israeli police headed off a suicide bombing Sunday when they stopped a car trying to enter the northern town of Beit Shean, police said.

Two Palestinians were in the car, police spokeswoman Aliza Azoulai said, without offering further details.

Security officials said earlier they had information that two suicide bombers armed with explosive belts were traveling toward Beit Shean. Police had fanned out across the area, and officers were stationed at schools in Beit Shean and Afula, another northern town that was considered a possible target, the officials said.

Police and rescue services had been placed on high alert around the two cities, and roadblocks were set up to check passing cars, Azoulai said.

A hundred ambulances and dozens of medics were put on call as rescue services went on the highest possible alert in the area, rescue services spokesman Yeruham Mendola said.

Israeli security forces in a high-speed chase on a major highway two weeks ago stopped a van carrying Palestinian militants and explosives they planned on using in an attack.
