SACRAMENTO – The state Board of Education has voted against offering alternative assessments for students who fail to pass California's high school exit exam.

~snip~

About 100,000 seniors, more than one-fifth of the state's roughly 450,000 high school seniors, had not passed at least one of the sections at the start of this school year.

So lets see... The Teachers Union was all against this testing, and one of their excuses was that the teachers would "teach to the test" and ignore other valuable lessons.

If a 20% failure rate is the best they can do "teaching to the test" it appears that these teachers are even more incompetent then we first thought.

... but not to worry - they will magically become great teachers if only we give them more money.

The problem is obvious - the schools aren't receiving enough funding and they need more administrators. The classrooms are too big too. FEMA needs to step in and give away some $2,000 credit cards, and fast!

Why that's right, and fortunately it's an election year, so a bond measure or two or three should be on the ballot!

I certainly agree with you that our ed system has a lot of problems, but I have to put a lot of blame on kids who just plain don't want to learn.

Here in CA we have nearly half our school population made up of kids who come from parents and a culture where education just isn't important.

I probably wouldn't have passed that test because I would have been too overwhelmed knowing that my entire future depended on it. When I took the SAT and ACT (don't know why I took both), I had to get a waiver to go to college. I remember my ACT was 17. I maintained a 3.8 in college and I have a 133 IQ. I just can't take those type of tests.

There is a HUGE difference between these Graduation Exams and the ACT and SAT. You basically need to be able to read and count to pass Graduation Exams...

"I just can't take those type of tests."

Curious ... just what was so different about all the college tests where you got your 3.8 average ?

These kids aren't having problems because they're too hyped up. They're having problems because they're barely conscious.

A High School diploma shows that you are barely functional in this world. I don't think many would call qualifying for one as showing that you have an education in this day and age.

It's the pressure. I just don't feel it when I am in a classroom being tested on one subject. If I do bad, I can make it up on the next test. The ACT and SAT meant much more to me and you can't do anything right away to fix it if you screw it up.

Oh, OK That High School exit exam lets you take it over and over again - You get up to FIVE chances to pass it and you only have to retake the portions you didn't pass.
